Even if their grief stemmed from entirely different feelings, they still shared it in quiet moments like this.

[[ Roman AU, Lion's Conquest. ]]
Some sad love-makin' between Vic and Max after fleeing Rome. This is basically the start of this story's epilogue, when Ric has just been killed by the senate. He got increasingly paranoid and murderous in the end, so the senators saw fit to have him overthrown.
After that Vic swiftly takes care to get Maxima and her children out of the city and on a boat to Egypt. They hide out there for a bit, all the while dealing with their shared feelings of having lost a lover, friend, emperor, all that.
Vic saw Ric as a friend, companion, physical lover (not emotional) and most of all, the person he had sworn to protect. So he's dealing with his failures and loss.
Max was very much the physical and emotional lover, and of course she takes his death just as hard. Losing a husband who she saw as nothing short of mighty and powerful made her feel like nowhere was safe anymore for her, Vic, and again most importantly, her children.
Anyway, now that I hope I made you sad, enjoy this teeny tiny painting!! (It's really small, which is why the style is kinda simplified)
