Producer Tier: Tutorial (October)

A bit late, sorry for that!

Martijn makes a beat on the spot using only samples from Splice. Nothing too technical, but hopefully an insight into how to: vibe.

Producer Tier: Tutorial (October)

Comments

As Nik would say, Patreon is shit. Vimeo is also shit. just saying. got always problems like at the age of myspace.

FRNCN

tbh, I enjoyed it. My favourite tut so far even. Gives a nice inside of your approach of workflow!

Tom

This video is fantastic! I learned a ton of stuff you probably didn't set out to teach. Great use of offset and flam on the sounds. Really organic groove. Bigup Rudi!

Cannot load the video due to piracy setting.

Just realized at the end of vid this was done using only splice samples. insane! : - o

Francis

i'm here for Martijn's head bobbing

m00seT

Thanks, that was pretty dope

ProC2: Clean, -60 Threshold, Max ratio, Hard Knee, Fast attack, 10-20ms lookahead, adjust hold and release to the length of the sound you want to let through.

Joe Bennett

Thank you so much for this tutorial. This may be basic knowledge but could you share the Pro-C2 and Pro-L settings?

Jones George

BTW Rudi... you forgot the Ghost Schnitzel Schnarezzzz

Georgie

Thank you Martijn, ive still not quite got thru the last 20 minutes as i am working whilst trying to watch your vid. But i wanted to at least drop a few lines to express what this has done for me. For one this has given me some real backflashs to cubase and its workflows. The other thing is that i love to see how your workflow and handling of your daw looks like.. every 5 minutes i swap to my daw as i felt the urge to try something or was just plain inspired by the vibe. But overall this is a sweet ultra nerd way to share and this would never have been possible in the "old" days. Love what you are doing

Georgie

Thank you so much for the video! Super inspiring and incredibly insightful as everyone else has already said and we cannot thank you enough for it. Vibes! Call me crazy but I swear I hear the dynamics of the drums change slightly when Martijn opens up the "destinations" window and selects the kick and snare to go to a send with "Fabfilter..." in the send/return name box. The transients seem to pop more suddenly, and I also noticed when sending the song elements to the sc buss, the channel "stereo out" was used, not the "destinations window" like the kick and snare. Are the drums being compressed within a template setup that gets potentially changed up during the final mix? Thanks again!!

Every since your Shibuya Pet Store vid I've really gotten into automating everything. I used to avoid it just because I would always draw it in manually, but now I've keymapped automation recording to make it more convient in Live so I can just spontaneously automate parameters like you do here and it's really opened up more processing options.

Bob Gibson

Classic vid, actually tried that with the glass and a rust-ridden SM58 😂

Scartip

Awesome vid! It’s nice to know how much you’re able to do with very few effects. The only thing i would have liked to have seen (since it was on the other screen), is how much volume reduction and for how long the side chain is ducking out everything. It sounds very substantial with maybe an 80 ms release, but it would have been interesting to see if there was eq on the sidechained kicksnare and the like. Maybe in a next vid. Love the track though!

Tyler Carson

That’s gold guyz! Learning with you all one at a time is really pleasant dudes. Remember me this old video when you were 20s, and that crazy bass secret video on youtube. Remeber with an empty glass with a mic and that paper vibrating against the speakers! So nice we can see you again. And cubase is amazing, it feel easy to work on it. So nice to meet you guyz 🖤

gunther

Thanks for replying to my comment regarding macros, I feel embarrassed not to have known this over the years tbh but hey I suppose we are always learning. On a side note, I've just watched some videos on the new stuff in Cubase 11 and WOW! Their new plugins look amazing, going to be on that for sure.

Kieran Unsworth

Thanks. The idea is sort of that there's not really a lot going on, but the interaction between the samples is what makes it interesting. Not too excited to upload the stems for this, as you can follow the whole process in the video :) Will think about it though! -Martijn

VISION

Vibes!

VISION

Splice is kind of one big sample pack, as you can pick and choose from all the packs on there.

VISION

Thanks!

VISION

Thank you!

VISION

Usually I would already have some go to samples that I like or use synths or things like that. So, the new thing was that this was 100% done without preselecting any samples or adding vst instruments. -Martijn

VISION

Some of the key commands are custom, you can customize them in the menu at: "file > key commands". -Scrolling through audio files in cubase media bay can be found under F5 -Render in place can be found under the "edit" tab. You will have to select the render settings (such as if it includes the group and or master channels it is routed to or not etc) and then you can select a key command in the key commands menu (see above) to render with these selected settings each time. -In the "file > preferences" menu you can go to "transport" and select "Return to start position on stop" to start playback from the same position over and over.

VISION

Kick and snare are just sending to the side-chain input of Pro-C2, which is on a bus called SC . Everything that is routed there (Bass etc) is then side-chained by the kick and snare. Nothing fancy!

VISION

No releases as Rudi atm :P -Martijn

VISION

I admit I skipped some parts, which were more monotonous, but overall I like the idea of this concept. Maybe you could put up the stems of this, to listen in isolation. thanks

Adam Burucs

That was super interesting exercice seeing you produce !! but something take my interest up, i heard twice "its something new for me to proceed like that" ( at least its what i understood ), could you be more price about thas ? what is different from your usual procedure ?

Lost

Thanks for this, it is a great insight into your workflow. I have a couple of questions regarding Cubase, and some of the shortcuts you use, namely how to scroll through audio files to audition sounds, and also the shortcut to render audio in place so it can be quickly resampled. Also, one more, what is that shortcut you use to restart the loop over so that you can restart it quickly to hear how it sounds when you are adding sounds (like you did when you started adding the first hi hat). Thanks again! These videos are making lockdown a lot more tolerable.

Kieran Unsworth

Love these tutorials! Find it super inspiring. Turned back to samples I made two years ago, which I thought were worthless, but started vibing with them again :D

Jahfed Wismans

Any favorite sample packs?

Mike Miller (Penurious)

Is the sidechain "trigger" group just being sent the kick and snare? And then the second group is side chained to the first group?

Phygment

Loved this. Can you link any beats that u have released like this? I searched for rudi, couldn't find.

5EPHRO5_patron

sick cant wait for the next 1

BERRIX

Sick tut Martijn! ofc can't and won't speak for everyone but it is completly understandable by me if sometimes you guys have to delay the tutorials for whatever reasons. Don't feel pressured by that, if there are 2 in a month no problem, perfect!. Pretty much every single subject on the tutorials has been so interesting and open mind to me that of all I had to relearn a lot of stuff.

Tidmey

Thank you all so much for coming around and still uploading something for October as opposed to just skipping the month since it has already passed. The amount of insight and inspiration these uploads bring make them a highlight of my month. I think I speak for many here when I say its greatly appreciated !
