Producer Tier: Tutorial (January)

Hello Person,

Say hi to our first tutorial for 2021.

Nik talks 'reeses', the infamous bass sound as many of you know. He goes from scratch, making a couple of these sounds for different instances.

Enjoy!

Producer Tier: Tutorial (January)

Comments

The videos aren't working anymore :/

Matt Levine

does vimeo links are dead ?

PatchMePlease

lmao was just finishing a dub during the last tut when I noticed it and got dizzy for a second

Tom

What is the sidechain doing? how is it taking the input from the mono reese into the stereo reese? how would i do this in ableton?

Kofta Ball

Yeah. Thought I'd had way too much coffee

Did anyone else wonder if they got accidentally dosed when they first noticed the VERY slow Ken Burns zoom effect on the shots of Nik?

ill.GATES

thanks for this! second one got me feeling inspired. Nice to learn more about how to waveshape properly.

jericho

man i thought both were great. I mean I'm a n00b but that first one was crazy good too. I did like the second one better but thank you. I think I have to do this again. I got a froggy reese on that that second one. I am not pleased.

it's very old...from a brand called 9mm. It has holes in it :D

VISION

amazing. thankyou!

5EPHRO5_patron

hey are you able to share the hoodie you are wearing ? haha i really like it.

Chase Kalis

wasn't the original Reese Bass a preset on a Juno?

As for the Mute pre-send when mute, I went into Cubase and unticked the button. It didn't work, but then I went back into the preferences and i noticed it had ticked itself again, I unticked it once more and it worked, must be a bit flaky and turns itself on again.

Kieran Unsworth

Brilliant tutorial as always. Would love to see one on wave shaping and wave folding as you mentioned.

Kieran Unsworth

Such an incredible tut.. Thanks so much for the info. There shouldn't be any problem doing what you did with send channels in ableton right? Just a lil lost on that part xO Thanks again!!! very useful!!

absolutely

VISION

I'd love to get a deeper dive into synth drums, following up on the last synth drum tutorial. Diving into some examples of finished drum sounds, maybe a more detailed look at the Foundations snare(s). The Dead Limit remix and Get Deaded also have excellent drums that could be interesting to have a look at. Just examples of course, but it would be nice to see more "finished" drum sounds and what makes them tick. Great vid as always!

So interesting as always, thanks Nik !

Best tutorial ever! Thank you

Another great tutorial. Thanks ๐Ÿ‘

Veil.Combine

yeah, with saw based reeses there is lots ofroom for pushing parts of it with EQ :)

VISION

This is the type of tutorials I'm here for!!!

Well this was awesome, thank you

Oliver Wolf

Always felt distorting saw waves was under-fulfilling cos of all the existing harmonics, there's no space for new harmonics to go. The EQ before distortion is a simple but cool trick, give it some resonant character and holes for the distortion to fill, really cool, think i've just been using it wrong all this time

Andrew Ridley

Some serious gems in here. As always, love that you explain your thought process and think about stuff like: "How should I achieve this thing I'm trying to do" before you just throw a plugin on and start going.

Nico Stadi

Thanks again Nik for another great tutorial. I noticed at 25.58-26.03 you change the EQ bell to 24 db/oct and increase the level, quite drastically. This reminded me of the 'warm' body of the reese in Mantra (just before the drop, circa 2.34). Would you recommend experimenting with increases to the EQ bell-shapes in this frequency area, to help achieve extra warmth in the lo-mids? I had a quick try really pushing the EQ (approx 100-300hz) and it helped make the overall bass less 'tinny' and 'thin' - if that makes sense ๐Ÿ˜‚Many thanks, Scartip.

Scartip

So good so good!

KJ Sawka

And accented lowpassing on highs is also a cool trick, def will get a try <3

Nik, thanks a lot! Yeah, another tut on waveshaping is a great idea, have some thoughts and guesses about this process but your clarification on a subject is highly appreciated

I love the idea behind the oscillation/beating zero crossings of the reese being like a super or hyper fundamental of its own, and really, beautifully the truth its in the way reese moves around and through you, the hyper sphere i guess for lack of a bettter term. . Really got me thinking deep on this, thanks again Nik!

This sound litterally shaped an era of music and continues too. And to watch a true master at the easel, fantastic. Cheers Nik!

I liked the 2 saw patch the best. gunna spend this week just making tonnes of those haha :D

Douglas Mcleod

Notice that you were +4db . Is that something you would address in a track?

Mike Miller (Penurious)

ะžั‡ะตะฝัŒ ะบั€ัƒั‚ะพ, ัะฟะฐัะธะฑะพ ั‚ะตะฑะต ะะธะบ Very cool thank you Nik

I LOVE 2021 LOL thank you Nik

Don Skotnicki

Thank you Nik, your attention to the philosophy behind what you're doing is appreciated as always, great tut and cheers, I finally have an alternative to smexoscope. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿš€

Very great tutorial as always. Thank you Nik! Do you have a favourite hardware synth for Reese sounds?

Moe NoTone

Great video. Maybe i will be trying the more controlled method but i also love the first reese a ton. Teached me a lot ! I also am glad that there is still a discovery and fiddeling process for you guys when trying to attain a certian sound. Really inspirational !

Xantorias Lor

Really liked the distorted reverb processing part. When i make reeses they often end up too dry and later won't sit well in a mix, but i also found it hard to add verb and glue it with the reese. So, this gave me some cool ideas :) Thank you!

Tom Finster

1 and a half hour of reese tutorial? Looks like '21 goes further the right direction

Tom

insane level tutorial. thanks nik!
