Producer Tier: Tutorial (September)

Hello Producing Person,

This month; Nik takes us through the hairy donut-shaped world of Collider, where confusion awaits, as well as many drum layers and arrangement decisions.

Enjoy and let us know your thoughts!

EDIT: Apparently the video doesn't work on Android. We're not sure what's causing this and for now recommend you enjoy it on iOS, PC and Mac.

Producer Tier: Tutorial (September)

Comments

i use this song as a reference track a lot and will catch myself stopping production and listening to it all the way through cause it's so damn good lol

WN

Some of the bass layers seem very "out there" as something I would not design for that riff. Are some samples "failed" versions of bass sounds that became later reenforcing textures or harmonics from the same project as in not imported bass?

Chris

Rocking out to the midi version of this song just brought major joy to my morning hahah. Thank you so much for these. So cool and inspiring to see some of my favourite songs broken down and how many versions/experiments it can take to get to the final "right" version. I remember Martijn dropping this at a Vancouver show before it was out and it blew my mind. Thank you again!

Phonik Ops

Thanks Nik another wicked tutorial love the way you guys layer ya sounds that sound layered under the main riff sounded like steel pans haha great to see the level of small details you guys go into proper going in that is i always learn loads of new things when i watch these wanted to ask layering that many snare samples or noise etc how do you keep it all in phase ?Thanks again really enjoyed this one !

Thank you so much these breakdowns rule! Would you ever consider digging into the "Sinkhole" project file? Track has some of my favorite sound design/stereo imaging of all time.

Theo Bass

Awesome, thanks! It was, like often, a happy accident ;) N

VISION

Thank you Nik, amazing break down. It finally inspired me to RTFM for an hour and figure out Mconvolution's follower and modulation when I remade the lead synth you demonstrated. Such a concise but awesome processing chain for that sound.

Bob Gibson
