Producer | Tutorial : Caps Lock (Closer)

Hello (Producing) Person,

This month, Nik takes you through the story of 'Caps Lock' (a collab with Black Sun Empire), explaining its long gestation period and some of it's bass sound design.

Enjoy and let us know your thoughts!

Wow that breathing technique does work. I had a friend show me some breathing exercises back in the day but all they ever did was make me light-headed. This actually helped, thanks Nik! I come for the hi-hats, I stay for the LPTs. <3

He touches on that subject in the 2nd Distortion video. I don't think a lot is going on on the master besides a limiter these days. I think a lot of what makes their music so loud is how much information is in the side without the Haas effect. It was a crazy revelation for me when I listened to my favorite tracks flicking between the mid/side signals. Still scratching my head on how magical their mixdowns are for sure.

One Sound Every Day (santino)

Hi Nik, I'm good friends with Tommaso de Donatis, he got a kick out the fact that you mentioned his track as an influence on this!

Please do an entire tutorial on how you approach the master bus in 2022 Nik! Have been paying $30 a month for 2 years 🤣

Really would have liked to see how that build-up stabby bass sound was made. It sounded a lot like it was resampling the bassline from Collider, but maybe just a similar style of sound?

Tyler Carson

the wholesome start of this tutorial is just wth i needed before work.

Very cool, what do you use on the master bus? i feel like its too easy to push stuff into a limiter when there is one there. Do you make sure there is head room for mixing if there is a limiter? or do you just push into it while adding instruments?

dead limit tut pls

Thank you Nik, this was such a nice nostalgic trip of a tutorial and also very insightfull. i hope you are feeling well too :)

Thank you for this and the life changing music. I love to learn about the reference points. I think it is a successful nod to those tracks especially the first one you showed because of the unexpected transposition of the riff. This video was super inspirational. I love those weird overtone basses. When I first heard James Nestor talk about the dangers of mouth breathing a few years ago, I immediately thought of a certain song...

Santino

Thanks! Awesome bass. Still looking forward to an in depth mixdown/master buss/sidechaining techniques video.
