Chapter 1: The Giant Wakes

Admiral Halsey, Commander of Carrier Division 2 walked onto the bridge of his flagship bearing an expression which many aboard the same ship now shared. It wasn’t one of fear, nor one of anger. No… this was an expression of cold, concentrated rage. Everyone hates Mondays, the reality check of a relaxing peace being shattered by the necessity of labour. But as Halsey gazed at the aftermath of Pearl Harbour, he was sure that this had to be the Monday to end all Mondays. The ship on which he stood, USS Enterprise, was the darling of the Pacific fleet; she had been given one of the very first production radar systems in the US Navy. The CXAM-1 Air Search Radar, and she had been the carrier used for the film Dive Bomber, A US Navy propaganda masterpiece starring the great Erroll Flynn as well as the pilots of Enterprise’s Air Group, VF and VB 6. The Yorktown Class Aircraft carrier, known by the name Big E, was a star of both the world stage and the silver screen.

But no more. No. From now on she was a warrior, an unsheathed sword, a bringer of righteous vengeance against those who dared to do her comrades harm. And Admiral Bill Halsey was definitely looking to do some harm of his own. As Enterprise pulled into the quay, the 1MC cried out it’s age-old cry “MOORING” while the ships bell chimed. This was followed by orders from the bridge, “Attention all hands, all men are to assist in reprovisioning and refuelling, we sail as soon as this is done, that is all”. What normally takes a full 24 hours, was to be done in under eight. Officers and Enlisted, from pilots to cooks. Every man sprinted to the storehouses alongside. Enterprise and her sisters were the only capital ships the US Navy had, as the ships which would normally sally forth to fight were now resting on the bottom of the harbour. With many of their crews trapped screaming inside their burning and sinking wrecks. However, the few ships in the Pacific Fleet which could still sail made ready for war, and all the men aboard them knew that they were going to do what they were trained to do. And head straight into what they would call “harm’s way”.
