Development Blog #1

Welcome to my first development blog, where I will be showcasing some of the content I've been working on and sharing my thoughts on the development of the game.

In this very first blog entry, I'll be talking about...quest journals. Yep, you heard me right. No half-naked women for now.

Those of you who've played open-world RPGs such as Baldur's Gates, Pillars of Eternity, or the Divinity series will no doubt be familiar with the quest journal. If you've ever lost track of your progress, or need a refresher of what's been going on in the game after a break, all you need to do is check the quest journal.

I myself would often bring up the quest journal time and again since I'm not the type to follow walkthroughs. But when creating Tales of the Exiled, the idea that some players might forget their quest objectives completely threw over my head. Since I created all those quests myself, I know exactly where everything in the game is supposed to be - but I forgot the fact that players, the ones who are actually playing the game might have no idea where to go next, or where their next objective is.

But the stock RPG Maker engine doesn't come with anything resembling a quest journal. How was I going to implement something like that with my pitiful coding skills? Fortunately, I've come across an existing plugin for RPGMZ that works well for this task. It even comes with a quest tracker, which can update your quest objectives in real time. Very handy feature indeed.

Check out the screenshots to see the quest journal in action. If all goes to plan, the quest journal feature will be implemented in V0.3.
