New Video SOON + Updates

Hi friends! It's been too long, I know. I have a long road to recovery with my RSI, and it's not always a straight, clear path. I'm doing well, and hope to get back to a more regular schedule soon.

---

The above screenshot is the current state of my next video, which I think I am going to title "Obsidian: The Good Parts". There are a thousand videos telling you how to use obsidian's features, but very few of them tell you WHY. This is my attempt to right that, by both giving a comprehensive deep-dive into the three core pillars of the app (folders, tags, links) and also why you would and wouldn't use each, in order to build your own second brain / knowledge system / doomsday plan.

While my research into the PKM world has been extensive [zettelkasten, PARA, johnny decimal, GTD, ROAM, LogSeq, on and on] - while these topics have informed my method, but I don't need to bloat the video with them.

I have some choice bonuses for your Patreon cut, including what MY system looks like (with downloadable templates) - and I can't thank you enough for sticking around.

My last video was on the 30th of June, but looking at my stats, the number of you supporting me has not changed at all - this is truly a blessing, and I'm extraordinarily grateful. This has meant that I have not had to make the terrible decision between my health and paying the bills (bills always win), and I will not forget this gift you have given me.

Thank you all again, I can't wait to see what you think of the new video, and for those who have the patience to read this far, a cheeky announcement: I will have a brand-new podcast pilot - my first non-fiction pod - for your evaluation right here on the NB patreon feed, hopefully, this week!
Talk soon,

Tris <3

In relation to obsidian tutorials and our use. I mean, you’re talking about coping mechanisms for people with over excitable brain and executive dysfunction. I learned that the use of “[Paamayim Nekudotayim](https://www.php.net/manual/en/language.oop5.paamayim-nekudotayim.php)” or `::` the doubly columns. Say ; ```markdown Whatever:: [[Hello World]] ``` It was a way to add “tags” before. It’s called “inline metadata”, I think) Using link as tags requires to use the idea of “High-Order Note” (https://forum.obsidian.md/t/a-guide-on-links-vs-tags-in-obsidian/28231 — heh, like Vue’s High-Order Components” But with native front-matter tags and tasks with ability to use #tag we can filter pages with tags the same way with tasks. See how rating and length are encoded NOT in the front matter in this page https://blacksmithgu.github.io/obsidian-dataview/annotation/metadata-pages/ Maybe elaborate on the variants and your thoughts. Or a warning about the different ways to avoid digging in such rabbit hole needlessly I had to write DataView API to learn about this, maybe it’s a good thing to teach if someone uses what you’re publishing as an introduction to obsidian. Having known before. I wouldn’t have bothered with Templates with title repeated under the front matter, and those clumsy \nFoo::Bar\n and used front-matter only.

Get well! Our body isn’t unlimited, we got to take care of it. I was wondering if you plan to also show how you implemented the task system “in context”. That’s probably not for groceries and other things, but rather “when working on X-context, …”. I can see the use of tags (Obsidian native hashtag tags) as way of filtering. Probably tag per context (e.g. travel logistics, investing, home-lab, home-network, project-A, content-creation, learning-about-foo, etc.) but maybe I’m over complicating things. I’m with a 2 y.o. baby, wife is actively being compensating for my executive dysfunction. But the things I manage, I don’t want to drop the ball. Since my priority (a.k.a. Day job) is father, time for heads down is limited and scarce. The way I see it is. 1 idea per page (e.g. “`#task re-balancing #investment #portfolio by [[Injecting DCA 2000 in Portfolio Alpha]]`”). If it’s a thing that I know will be done that’s worth doing, It’s a page. I break out separate principles in respective pages (e.g. one page for `[[Investment Portfolio A]]`, and `[[Injecting 2000 in Portfolio Alpha]]` and `[[DCA]]`for the portfolio detail, the breakdown of amount that I will have number of shares done recently, and a reminder about DCA that mean Dollar Cost Averaging). Things like the portfolio, the concept of Dollar Cost Averaging, it’s in a “sources” parent folder where I have templates that tells me where I picked the information. Indo the same for citations for books, authors, academic papers I read, etc. Idea being that there’s (1) stuff I work on, (2) the stuff that I read/learned/taken elsewhere, (3) the day planers and/or projects or timestamped events (e.g. a postmortem), and (4) what I published (copy of a Reddit forum thread I appreciated, with relevant copy of the conversation, and my thoughts, and what I replied, or my Web site pages, using obsidian as my place to maintain pages for my site that’s managed via markdown text files I deploy). (Sorry for the nested subject. I’m making it less obvious than (LISP()) Then, for the tasks. Idea of seeing what’s to be done, described in context so it’s ready to be worked on at that time. For example, working today on the task of re-balancing portfolio, Increate a time stamped page (e.g. 2024-09-01 Investment Portfolio Rebalancing) that will sort nicely with the daily notes (e.g. 2024-09-01). When the task is done, I add the link of the rebalancing page on the task, check the task, wherever the task was put. Or I moved that task into the daily note. And I keep track of any page I touch and/or create in a specific section I imagine there’s a way to make a way to have list of tasks per contexts. Say I can spend 1.5h and household priority is home logistics, I should have no excuse of “not seeing” that I left a task in one page on the subject with notes that I left for that purpose. I can see how to do that. But I’m curious how you’d do it.

Absolutely love that the PKM stuff is gonna be the next video! Fantastic timing for me as I’ve slowly been trying to organize my Obsidian vault whilst battling urges to just archive it all and start anew. And I still use pen and paper for journaling, so it gets even more confusing at times.
