(I’m a native French speaker). If I had been drinking coffee and hearing you say:”get the gender right on a french name”. I’d have spit all over. (Language and semantics) I’m currently learning Portuguese. English was my second language. Grammar was much simpler than French’s. Portuguese pronounces almost all the time every letter. It’s simple. In French not so much. Portuguese person learning French trying to write “cake” (gâteau) and say it (ghaaa thau). Hard
