Podcast 205 - Mustang country

Jonny and Richard invent a new sub-genre of music. Also in this episode, Beyonce and a self-parking Lexus, topics only covered in country songs, annoying bings and beeps, more about touch screens from listeners who know their stuff, French car shows, acceptable accordions, being the Cathy Dennis of The Grand Tour, Citroen ZX trim levels, more on the Eagle Quest, Donald Trump’s Diablo, putting your name on the kick plates, the trials success of the Suzuki X90, and why the Licence To Drive poster from last week caused a listener’s dad to lose his temper in France.

I find the nature sounds in the Hyundai really great. There’s one called ‘interior if a cafe’ or something which is stretching the definition of ‘nature’

Ed Storer

How old? Old enough that it has no electrics? It’ll be grand

Ed Storer

I have a samsung oven and it plays a short jaunty jingle when it gets up to temperature, and a slightly longer, slightly jauntier one when the timer ends.

Rich Tysoe

My Boxster also sometimes beeps twice when locking or unlocking. It's because the alarm thinks something hasn't fully locked or unlocked, generally an issue with a door latch but as they're about £400 each I just live with it until it gets to the point wher ethe alarm starts going off.

So when you buy the Eagle Quest, you NEED to turn it into a podcast studio for your Smith and Sniff guest list

On the way back from holiday yesterday in Germany and Having visited the Nürburgring and seeing Depeche Mode in Cologne, I saw a gold Rover 800 Vitesse on Belgian Plates and it looked In Pretty good nick!

Matthew Bartlett

In June I'm going on holiday to Germany in an old Renault. It'll be fine.

David Guy

Had a Kia e-Niro as a courtesy car for a few weeks over Christmas. After the first week I found myself driving round listening to thunderstorms. Unless it was actually raining. Then I switched to oceans....

Kaiser Ed

Was listening on my morning walk today, I turned the corner and an Eos appeared just as you were talking about them… on that side of things.

Connor Hawkins

That is a very German way of doing things... :-D

Andy Pinchock

@Jonny - one or 2 pips after locking or unlocking a Boxster means either Trunk, Frunk or Glovebox thinks its open. If your glovebox light doesn't work it could be the relay switch blown on the glovebox so the car thinks it's constantly open.

Tom Lane

Re the 3 words thing, I looked at relevant locations and their addresses. On Spowart Avenue I found: https://what3words.com/vague.mess.tuned https://what3words.com/proper.clean.motor And on Spowart Drive: https://what3words.com/mercy.silly.dads

Usedom is very nice. Went there during the pandemic. Peenemünde is there where the V-1s and V-2s were developed. It is a very eery place place as the Biritsh bomber the be-jeezus out of it. There is still a Lancaster at the bottom of a pond there. Was an important naval base for the GDR as well... Rügen is also very popular.

Andy Pinchock

Feel free to stop by! BTW: Your last name in German would be Eichhörnchen, literally Oak Small Horn!

Andy Pinchock

The closest car dealer to me when growing up, was a Citroën garage. 10 year old me used to want a black ZX Volcane with the optional reflector panel between the lights. And the Furio was also an insurance friendly version of the Saxo too. Popular in my last year at school, due to free insurance deals.

Iain W

I spent 4 nights in Kraków recently and by the end, I was really getting into accordion-based Eurodance, given that the music channels were the only thing on TV that had some English language content.

Iain W

Yeah, Volvo say the roof needs to be serviced every 15k miles. I doubt most of them get that.

david marden

My what three words: three.Daewoo.Esperos funnily enough exactly what I purchased on Easter Sunday.

John Hammond

Richard should remember that promos for the ‘Grand Tour’ used ‘Come with me now’, a danceable(?) anthem from the Kongos that prominently featured an accordion/squeezebox throughout.

Tim Gilbery

I heard from a guy round at the Co-op that the Eagle Quest was owned by Madness. The drummers cousin used to volunteer to drive it so he could go cruising for chicks while the band were playing. Suspicious stains on the back seat have nothing to do with this.

Kev Mackintosh

Three words... Idle Twat Chat ..

david marden

Sounds like the Mustang song will give Richard ample work avoidance time in the near future....

david marden

I wish I still had my Peugeot 309 GTI Cherry bomb an All. The Sunroof Seal Vacuum. Still baffles me now thinking back what a decent car that was for the time.

Talking of cars beeping and bonging: all recent Renaults seem to do the beep when locking. More irritating is the fucking incessant bonging that all newer Kia and Hyundai cars make when reversing. I live in an apartment complex with parking in the courtyard. Several neighbours own these cars. The charming sound of the avian dawn chorus has been replaced with an annoying automotive beep/bong chorus. There's one particular woman that puts her Niro EV in reverse, then often seems to feel the need to write SMS or have a telephone conversation, all the while with the fucking car bonging away. Grrr. ETA: Germany is my favourite holiday destination.

Chris Squirrel

(Verse 1) Well, I strummed my guitar, as the sun went down, Headed out west, in my Mustang, bound. With the wind in my hair, and the road stretching wide, I stumbled upon something, that stirred deep inside. (Chorus) It was a French car show, where the accordions played, Sippin' on wine, in the shade they laid. Dreamin' 'bout German vacations, under skies so blue, But my heart kept driftin', back to you. (Verse 2) Amongst the classic cars, I felt out of place, But there was somethin' 'bout that scene, I couldn't erase. The sound of accordions, in the sweet summer air, Took me back to moments, when you were there. (Chorus) It was a French car show, where the accordions played, Sippin' on wine, in the shade they laid. Dreamin' 'bout German vacations, under skies so blue, But my heart kept driftin', back to you. (Bridge) In those cobblestone streets, where romance was born, In the vineyards of France, where memories adorn. Yet in the midst of it all, my mind would stray, To the times in your arms, where I longed to stay. (Verse 3) As the day turned to night, and the stars took their place, I found myself lost, in this unfamiliar space. But through the music and the laughter, one thing rang true, No matter where I wander, my heart belongs to you. (Chorus) It was a French car show, where the accordions played, Sippin' on wine, in the shade they laid. Dreamin' 'bout German vacations, under skies so blue, But my heart kept driftin', back to you. (Outro) So as I drive on, in my Mustang's embrace, I'll carry these memories, of a distant time and place. But wherever I roam, whatever I do, My heart will always find its way back to you.

Andy Pinchock

Hi guys, I wasn't sure if the three words were to describe the show, or if the location of the three words was meant to so I've gone with the latter... ///newsprint.duplicity.hopes https://w3w.co/newsprint.duplicity.hopes

To further the X-90 chat, the reasons are roughly as outlined on the pod. The key thing with the X-90 other than being rugged and cheap, is they were available as RWD from the factory. This differentiates then from their Vitara brethren which were only 4WD in the UK. This amusingly means there is a reasonable difference in values of X-90s, as those with 2WD logbooks are worth more, as they're trials eligible as opposed to the 'full fat' 4WD models. Alongside my 1929 Austin 7 and Chrysler 75, I've trialled an X-90 for a few years now, and the combination of RWD, enormously high centre of gravity and massive rear weight bias due to the trials mods (lead in the boot), means it's very 'life affirming' to drive.

Andrew Wright

I would like to go to North Germany I hear, that’s pretty nice from a friend. Jonny I have a weird obsession with foxes a British singer. Like you do the corrs. It’s like she’s just singing to me. totally relatable. just works 💯

Courtesy of CountryGPT… (Verse 1) Well, Smith and Sniff, they hit the road, With a podcast and a dream, they’re bold. From town to town, they spin their tales, Of dusty roads and whiskey trails. They talk of love and they talk of pain, Of broken hearts and pouring rain. But on that side of things, they find, There’s always hope in a bottle of wine. (Chorus) So grab your boots and your cowboy hat, And listen close to their chat. Like and subscribe, they’ll make you sing, With every word, they’ll make your heart ring. (Verse 2) From Texas plains to Tennessee, They share stories of folks just like you and me. With guitars strummin’ and voices true, They’ll make you laugh, they’ll make you blue. On that side of things, they know, Life’s a winding road, it ebbs and it flows. But with a tune and a heartfelt word, They’ll guide you through, you’ll never be unheard. (Chorus) So grab your boots and your cowboy hat, And listen close to their chat. Like and subscribe, they’ll make you sing, With every word, they’ll make your heart ring. (Bridge) So here’s to Smith and here’s to Sniff, With every episode, they give us a lift. Through highs and lows, they’ll be your guide, Just press play and take the ride. (Chorus) So grab your boots and your cowboy hat, And listen close to their chat. Like and subscribe, they’ll make you sing, With every word, they’ll make your heart ring. (Outro) So tip your hat and raise your glass, To Smith and Sniff, they’ve got class. Like and subscribe, y’all, don’t delay, Their podcast journey, it’s here to stay.

Surely the Eagle Quest Hearse would be called the "Late(s)man". Pffft!

Adam Kiddle

When you started talking about Accordions, I though it was going to be about the variety of mid-sized Honda saloon owners. Also old Mustang country music might have some references to axle tramp and red-line tyres... and maybe some risque gender-confusion with lyrics like 'your brother is a Cougar'...

Foxy

Mustang Stacky, guess you better slow your Mustang down...

My old Lantra goes "beep beep" when locked. It fills me with silly joy every time. Yes, apparently I am still 9.

Pig Hut Nick here....So I just checked out my current position on ///what3words. ///harsh.speakers.upsetting in Bali. Absolute oposite of a S&S poscast. Also amused to see The Eagles Quest is a piece of music by Philip Sparke, which sounds like it's the music from a ripoff Disney ride in Germany. Think Ed der Maus at Europa Park .... Been lots of times and its very efficient, like the rest of the country.

Nick Davies

Cracking road too. Done that a couple of times.

I work for a main dealer, I dropped a used Nissan juke to a chap 30 mins North of Aberdeen. I picked up his part ex, a volvo c70, he informed me that it developed a fault with the roof. I drove 4.5hrs back to my dealership with the roof slightly ajar enough to get very wet and the whole time the bloody thing "bonged" at me telling me their was a fault. Fun times in Feb. I will never buy a CC!

James MacDougall

Mt grandparents bought a ZX Volcane in the early 00's. They had no idea what it was beyond s nice sensible diesel hatchback. My parents had a 306 dturbo at the same time and to say it came as a shock when my dad drove the Volcane one day and it felt considerably quicker than the 306.... A real sleeper of a car back then

Dan W

In the 1970s/80s when Ii was a kid, my father was an ad salesman then sales manager at the only country music in Toronto. So I got to listen to my fill of old school country music, which I still have a love/hate relationship with.

Ed Nicholson

You know who went to Germany on holiday? The Sega program lead behind the classic arcade game OutRun. He rented a 5-series and filmed the whole trip, and segments of the game are based on Germany's Romantic Road. Sweet, sweet game. I'm also curious to know some S&S approved country tracks. I'm not particularly into most of the bro-country stuff, but have been enjoying Jelly Roll of late. He looks like your glaucoma-addled elderly tire overinflator took an air hose to Post Malone, but his stuff is pretty catchy.

Brendan McAleer

I ve just been to an easter break holiday to Germany and a bit of the Netherlands with three kids. Its all amazing. Google Zollverein and landscape park Duisburg Nord

Speaking of the Kia/Hyundai start up music, it might be a bit of a South Korean thing - have you ever heard a Samsung washing machine? Mine plays a 30s jingle when a cycle finishes

///eagle.quest.states on what 3 words is between Inverness and Aberdeen... probably a good shout for an accordion with bagpipes should you want to revisit somewhere nr Glasgow again.

My 2009 BMW 135i has a dymo-tape reminder of tyre pressures stuck above the headlight switch, I fear removing it might look worse than leaving it be... I suspect the first owner, who seems to have been an 'interesting character' (I wouldn't get on a boat with him), but at least had good taste when it came to speccing the car.

I can't help but feel that at the next OTLOT we need to get a few volunteers forward to sing the end theme like Bono, Paul Young and Boy George with Rich and Jonny then get the whole audience to do the group singing

Stuart Richards

I think the Collecting Cars podcast via Chris Cooper also covered X90's this week in relation to the Land's End Trial. IIRC Jonny also got a mention as well.

As a Yankee (the ones who won all the wars,,[Vietnam was a tie]]) who HATES country and line dancing and who has lived in France and Germany and owned French and German cars AND whose sister in law is a professional accordion player I feel another looong email coming on!!! :)

The poor infotainment hardware stretches to the aftermarket too, that market is obviously shrinking but I refuse to buy a new touch screen stereo. The resolution is always shite and they're just so slow. Sony made a unit called the XSP-N1BT 10 years ago that used your phone as the screen, I got one just for fun and it works really well with a new iPhone. Nobody says they're going to Germany, it's either the Nürburgring or the Black Forest. There are chains of German Doner Kebab all over the world now, always found it an odd choice of name.
