Pleistocene Park Patreon report April 2020

Dear Friends!

Another month of your support has passed, and it is time to tell you how did things went in the Park.

In April we didn't have any expeditions with the animals, and we been working in the Park preparing for the summer.

Of the big job we fixed the big fence. Our biggest perimeter was build back in 2005-2006 and by this time some of the poles in the fence decayed or broke and we had to replace them. In the Arctic, with the permafrost present it is not the easiest task. In order to install the pole you have to make a 2 meter deep hole in the permafrost. We do not have heavy machinery to drill holes, so we use the steam for this. Basically it is a home made metal stove with a barrel on top of it (in our case it is an old 50 litre propane tank). When stove is running water is boiling and through the pipe steam is sent down to the ground. In 1-2 hours of "steam drilling" we get deep enough well and insert a wooden pole. Next day permafrost refreeze and the pole is intact at least for a decade. Image is below with two of the Park workers working on this "fancy" machine

All animals in the Park are doing good. Horses began to give birth and we already have couple of foals

Bison are now roaming in the big Park. They tend to hang out in the uplands, in the shrubby areas, browsing on willow.

Now is the time of snowmelt and winter roads are getting more complicated and dangerous to drive. We are almost done with providing all the supplies for the flood period, but still have couple of trips to make.  Hopefully they will go smooth.

I hope you and your relatives all stay healthy. Here we all do good. It is going to be a tough year for the Park, but I am sure we will be able to pass through it, and the Pleistocene Park will continue developing (with your help as well).

My best regards to all of you

Nikita
