Mega64 Record Club Ep. 78 - Joy Division - Closer(#309)

As promised Garrett is back! We talk about what some call the most depressing album of all time...can we have a little fun while doing it?

*Note that when we played Bill Withers is Blocked the entire episode so I edited those parts out if it seems to just jump around a little bit at the end. The MP3 version is unedited though

Unknown Pleasures is better than Closer to me, and is one of my favorite albums. Found it in high school because Thursday sang a song called "Ian Curtis" on the album Waiting. Peter Hook is one of my favorite bassist and I think some of New Orders music is just as good as Joy Division. Age of Consent is my favorite New Order song. I actually think Shawn would like New Order more than Joy Division. They are a little less post punk and more popish.

I've always been more of an Unknown Pleasures guy but after relistening to both of them this week, I think I dig them equally. Like Garrett sais, Unknown Pleasures has more standout hits like Shadow Play but Closer has more of a vibe and atmosphere throughout. 3.5/5 for me

I love closer partly because it sounds exactly like the music the goth kids listen to in south park; On david bowies warszawa: the song is totally about the post war devastation of warsaw and fits in with Joy Divisions imagery about evil nazi shit, the album that song is on (Low) is part of a series of albums bowie recorded in berlin in the 70s (low, heroes, lodger). At the same time, with bowie in berlin, Iggy Pop recorded an album with a lot of the same themes and sounds bowie was working with, The Idiot, which is the album Ian Curtis left playing while he hung himself.

I broke my foot dancing alone in my apartment on NYE to the Joy Division song Transmission.

Next time I want to feel like I’m sitting in a huge, dark cave I’ll turn on more Joy Division. I think A Means to an End was my favorite. I also didn’t know Love Will Tear Us Apart was a non-album single so I was surprised this didn’t have it. Sad, sad story. Groove Is in the Heart is such whiplash after this lol (I love Deee-lite 🦋🌀✨🪩🌼🍄)

Rest in Peace Ian Curtis. 𝟓/𝟓 🤍
