Picking A Career Path

This short story is based off the result of a poll from last week. Keep your eyes peeled for more polls in the future that allow you to influence the stories I write!

Adam was of the opinion that sixteen was simply too young an age for himself or anyone to decide what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives. He couldn’t even legally drink alcohol yet but he was expected to map out his whole adult life? Nah man, that was some bullshit and he was more than happy to let his teachers know what he thought about it. He’d always been an outspoken kid and was seemingly forever in trouble but he couldn’t really give a damn. He looked to live life by his own rules and he simply didn’t care whether or not others approved.

While he’d had every intention of skipping the school’s career fair, he’d been forced to attend when his escape attempt had been cut short by the security guard. Dumped in the middle of the hall surrounded by his fellow classmen and a seemingly endless number of stalls each manned by a pair of young men or women, Adam was forced to miserably accept that he’d be spending the next hour tolerating the overdone sales pitches being thrown his way from seemingly every direction.

“Can I help you, son?” a kind voice called out to Adam, some mind-numbing twenty minutes later. He turned his attention to the source of the voice - a burly man stood behind the stall promoting a career in firefighting. Fat chance I’d risk my life like that, Adam thought to himself sardonically. He didn’t exactly have much love for his fellow man and certainly not enough to put himself in harm’s way to protect them. Before he even approached the stall he knew that there was no way he’d be firefighting in his future but he’d at least keep up appearances. No doubt the school’s senior staff were keeping a close eye on him and he didn’t want to end up escalating whatever punishment awaited him for trying to bunk the careers fair altogether.

Adam had barely approached the stall by the time the older man began his well-rehearsed speech about what a rewarding career he could find working with the local fire department. Despite his previous certainty, the young man allowed the other to say his piece and listened intently. “We’re a brotherhood. A family. You don’t get that in many lines of work,” the man declared proudly as he finished up his speech, puffing up his broad chest and smiling brightly. There was a strangely infectious positivity about the older man that brought a smirk out of Adam, reluctant as he was to admit that the man’s charm was winning him over. “Look, son, I can tell you aren’t happy here. Truth be told I hated school too. Most of my boys did actually. It can take a while to find yourself but I really do believe we can help you achieve that.”

The man’s words echoed in Adam’s head even as he stumbled away to the next stall without a response and he found himself envisioning a possible future as a firefighter. Just that morning such a concept would have been ridiculous to him but he could see himself so vividly, stood proudly amongst a group of men with their chief at the lead - a real band of modern day heroes. The image took residence in both Adam’s head and heart and it wasn’t long before he found himself back in front of the fire department’s stall, signing up for a tour around the station and a proper sit-down meeting with the chief that very weekend.

Once he’d signed his name on the dotted line and passed along his various contact details, Adam rose to meet the older man’s smile and with some surprise accepted the navy blue t-shirt that was placed into his hands. “What’s this?” he asked, answering his own question as he spied the local fire department’s local emblazoned upon the upper left breast area.

“Consider it an incentive,” the chief responded in his usual jolly tone before finally turning his attention away from Adam, just in time to tell one of the school’s football jocks - one of the future “high school was the best time of my life” types - that he wouldn’t be a good fit for their department. The rejection came as something of a surprise to Adam; wouldn’t a well-built jock be a better fit for the job than a lean and undefined stoner kid? Not wanting to risk the meathead jock’s ire, Adam made a quick escape and opted to leave the career’s fair entirely, the t-shirt still held tightly within his grasp.

As the end of the week rolled around and Adam’s meeting with the fire department chief approached the young man felt certain that a career in firefighting was in his immediate future. He had felt compelled to try on the shirt he’d been gifted later that night and it had awoken something inside of him, something that he hadn’t even known he was missing. He discovered a sense of purpose, one that helped him see through the negative cloud that had hung over his head for so long and past the miserable hole he had sunk into over the years of loneliness and rejection.

It wasn’t just a positive outlook that Adam had gained in the days since the careers fair though, as his body had undergone a number of physical changes since then too. The shirt had been an adult size large and as such had left his slender frame swimming within the fabric. His first thought was that it looked ridiculous on him, like he was wearing his father’s clothes, but with every passing minute it seemed to fit a little better around his torso. His chest began to broaden as two round pecs protruded and six cobblestone abs popped forth from his previously undefined midriff. His shoulders swelled and stretched out the shirt while his sleeves fought back against the expansion of his biceps and triceps. A deep grunt escaped his lips as his legs began to follow suit, the thick thighs and strong calves causing the seams of his pants to split until his powerful legs were finally set free.

Overwhelmed by the arousal of his transformation, Adam explored his lengthening cock while enjoying the sight of his reflection. He had adopted a square jawline and well-styled blond hair, a sharp contrast from the round face and muddy brown hair he was used to seeing in the mirror. In both his body and face he appeared older - probably somewhere in his twenties as opposed to sixteen, and he looked damn good, like he’d just stepped off the runway and straight into a firefighter’s uniform. It was an unexpected but gorgeous sight, one that he couldn’t get enough of even after he’d hit his climax and blown his load.

After a night full of investigation and inspection, Adam got dressed in his full uniform and made his way down to the fire station. Just as he had expected the chief was waiting for him and embraced him with his strong arms. “Welcome to the family, son,” the older man remarked, holding Adam out at arm’s length and inspecting him closely. “It’s a good look on you.”

Pride flushed through Adam at the comment of approval. He’d felt so lost as a troublesome teenage student but as a fully grown adult with a career and purpose he just felt right. “Happy to be home, sir,” he replied, following his boss into the station and greeting his new brothers as they all prepared for a day of hard selfless work!
