2019-03-28 14:47:02 +0000 UTCnot to be the Sixers Fan In The Comments but I think i have an apt comparison which is Embiid is basically like the Rob Gronkowski of the NBA. I think it is fine to think he is corny! But I personally think there is some charm there that makes the 69 jokes less tedious than they would be coming from someone else, and also he is the exact kind of player that would and should be beloved by the fans of the team he is playing for because he is clearly an incredible talent AND openly disrespectful to other fanbases and cities, which is funny. Also I think something special in the case of Embiid, and the reason why Philly fans get extra defensive about him, is that while he was injured for the first 2 years of his career he basically was just a sixers fan. The only people who watched every game of the deep Process sixers are a bunch of nerds who would listen to this podcast and also Joel Embiid. And he would tweet things that obliquely aknowleged this small segment of the fan base and eventually made his entire brand and nickname the Process which is a thing that we made up and that the Sixers organization, especially while Bryan Colangelo was in charge, actively hated and discouraged. He just feels like he is more ours than any athlete in any sport I've watched. Anyway this is not a reason for everyone to like him or a reason that it is okay to be a baby about other people's opinions, just offering it as an explaination. People are allowed to hate Joel! It's obvious that some people would, because he has a strong personality and a lot of talent and everyone has an opinion about guys like that.
