Great ep! Couldn't agree with Carl more. Players aren't just expected to play well, they have to be Twitter darlings. Fans act like players owe them entertainment 24/7 and make no allowance for their humanity. KD is a legend for his clap backs in my book, and indeed the media HATED Kobe in life. The bar is always moving and "brand profitability" is what moves it.

Kevin Durant is hilarious he’s legendary cuz of Twitter “I’m bouta pull my “y’all broke” card in a second. Fuck y’all”

Fantastic discussion, fellas. I think haters have always existed to the extent that they exist now, but now they have more outlets with which to amplify their bullshit. It existed even with Jordan. I remember as a kid (and Pistons fan) talking with my friends about how Jordan wasn't that good, and if he didn't have Phil Jackson and the refs in his back pocket he wouldn't win anything. And if we had Twitter back then, we would have been spouting that ignorant bullshit online. What it all boils down to I think is that if the person you personally root for doesn't win, it's because of something egregious. I root for MJ, so when the bulls win it's because the refs were corrupt. But when the Bad Boy Pistons won? It was because we were gritty and crafty...not dirty. And like, I think Joe Dumars is a legend, but that's because I grew up rooting for him. I think the one big difference of the modern era is that social media has allowed the sports hatred that has always existed to permeate to a point where it's hard for people to truly root for anyone. They would rather bask in the Schadenfreude of seeing someone they don't like get torn down. And when that becomes the prevalent mode of thinking in sports fandom, then it becomes harder for anyone to rise to the level of "legendary." Sorry for the long post. This was a great ep.
