2023-12-01 18:56:31 +0000 UTCI’m a native Arizonan and Phoenix actually has a pretty big metro area outside of the city itself. There are tons of large suburbs that are their own cities (Scottsdale, Peoria, Chandler, etc). The thing about AZ is most people that live there are transplants because it was uninhabitable before central cooling systems became popularized in the 70s. Most people are from the Midwest and more recently California and Texas. Because of this, sports fandom for the AZ teams is super fickle with most people sticking to the teams from where they’re originally from. But as soon as the teams start doing well, everyone is a fan. There was a huge uptick in Suns fandom when I was a kid during the Dantoni Steve Nash era. And those were some really good teams that had great playoff battles with the dynasty era Spurs. Definitely have seen another increase in support recently since they made the finals in 21 but there are still definitely more Laker fans than Suns fans in AZ.
