The hockey takes are all legit. When a Canadian sportscaster talks about “toughness” in hockey versus basketball it’s appealing to the Canadian myth of moral superiority and American decadence (this is Loyalist shit). Also reflects the NHL’s insecurity about its relevance in the American market (aka ‘the market’) compared to the other big leagues.

Hayes mentioned Phil Kessel! It's worth noting that even early in his career his appearance and conditioning was criticized widely. When Phil was playing for the Maple Leafs he was their best player for a bit, but the leafs were still losing all the time. There's a great moment when one of the sport journalists confronts Phil and sort of gives him shit over his shape, implying that he should maybe work out some more and then maybe the leafs wouldn't suck shit as much, and Phil basically said "Well I look like this and I'm already the best player on the team. I think I'm doing my part." I always liked that attitude. Then Phil got traded to Pittsburgh and immediately won two Stanley Cups, which as a lifelong Maple Leafs hater I thought was hilarious. Also Great Toronto accent Carl, made me laugh on the street like a lunatic.

His PK is really good, then his Toronto Mans is spot on

the old timers in hockey used to deal with a lot of knee issues (Bobby Orr is the first that comes to mind) but the equipment has improved so much over the years, they actually train during the offseason, and cheap shots are a lot less common these days…so hockey players mostly retire with concussion issues now.

Cauliflower eared Flagrant fam appreciate Sean's support 🤝

Have always loved Carl's NYC accent, never knew how much I needed a Canadian accent.

pugilistatrest

Could replace Travoltafications with Will Smithifications (Sean publicly slaps a listener for insulting his family)

the “hockey players are tough” argument has always felt like a “my brother can beat up your brother” type of statement. i’ve been obsessed with hockey for 30+ years now and it always comes up from the worst corners of the sport. PK is one of my all time favorite players. he was one of the most electric players on the ice when he was in his prime and won the ‘13 Norris Trophy (best defenseman). i even briefly went “Luka Mad” when the Habs traded him, but i slowly came back to the team whose logo i have tattooed on my body. all that being said, PK’s trying hard to be 21st century Don Cherry and it’s been really off-putting, imo. thanks for the Frozen Ones ep!!!

Where do I go to clarify all these bad hockey takes?

First: I RIDE FOR MY GUYS AND CHEF KEVY. HANDBOOK AND FLAGRANT ONES ARE THE ONLY PODCASTS WORTH A DOGGONE. I CRUSH OTHER PODCASTS AND THEIR FANS UNDERFOOT. DIDN'T GIVE A GOOD DINGDONG ABOUT BBALL UNTIL THIS SHOW AND NOW I'M A CLIPPERS FAN (albeit a casual)... That said, the hockey disrespect (obviously mostly in jest) ya hate to hear and i gotta put a word in for the best sport. It is a meme with hockey players/fans that NBA is soft, but to most it is just a dumbass joke. PK can be very obnoxious, and many NHL fans despise him AS A BROADCASTER (along with Mess and other aspects of ESPN's NHL coverage). NHL players do play through crazy injuries (Matthew Tkachuk playing with broken sternum '23 stanley cup finals comes to mind), especially in big games/postseason, not that it's necessarily a good thing or that other athletes should do that or be allowed to. Their athleticism, fitness, and toughness is undeniably elite. Anyway, I LOVE YOU ALL AND AM IN LOVE WITH YOU. EDIT TO SAY I LIKED PK AS A PLAYER
