BADA: Pax Soprana (S1E6)

Carl and Lamar discuss fender benders, Spottagool and season 1 episode 6 of The Sopranos (“Pax Soprana”).

Comments

The Donald Driver comment made me think of a spottagool I had recently. I was standing in line at the grocery in Milwaukee and turned around to see LeRoy "Inventor of the Lambeau Leap" Butler right behind me. He is in a ton of local commercials and has been riding the Lambeau Leap wave forever. Was really nice.

The first season of the show is definitely the...not worst, not even "weakest," but it's strange. There's a couple of factors at play: they're stretching out David Chase's idea for a two-hour movie across 12 episodes, the show hasn't really established Tony's crew as the heart of the show (We've barely spent any time with Paulie and Sil, and even Chris has been largely absent in the last few episodes) and it's still playing with some surface-level, cutesy "What if The Mafia, but Suburban Casual?" ideas. Most important is what Kevin hit on with the "late 90's pacing" stuff - Chase and his writer's room were people who cut their teeth on network dramas, so as they're inventing what we think of as "Prestige TV" they're tentatively feeling out "What can we do without standards and practices to worry about, without having to account for commercial breaks?" They still fall into those old procedural drama habits from time to time, so these early episodes feel a little pokey.
