Patron Update: Reflecting on last video, ideas for next couple of videos, bonus content.

Howdy all!

First of all, thanks to those of you who watched & commented on my last video. I feel redundant in saying this, but it did better than I expected! I feel like I put a bit more of "myself" into the writing than usual, which I wasn't too sure about. But the reception has been very positive, and viewcount exceeded expectation within this time period.

As for the next video. I'll be covering all of the CD-I Zelda games (Wand of Gamelon, Faces of Evil, & Zelda's Adventure). I've already got a bunch of footage in the can, and I've made a pretty good dent in the script, so don't expect to wait very long for this one. Much has been said about the zany cutscenes are bizarre development circumstances over the years (and I obviously want to touch on this as well), but I've long been curious about the gameplay itself. Expect something silly, with a sincere look at some of the mechanical choices the developers made.

I've had a few ideas floating around for videos for a while now. I'd love to do a King's Field video, though I'm not sure what form that would take. A look at the whole serious would be really interesting to me, but that might take too long. Perhaps I'd break it into smaller parts. I'm not sure yet, and it's only just an idea, but some of the folks who commented on my 3DO video mentioned being interested in a dungeon crawler analysis. I'd also really like to do a Chrono Trigger video in a similar "synopsis" style to my Xenogears review. That's a bit more of an undertaking, and as such I'll probably chip away at it while working on other things, but I'd like to get that done in 2023.

A lot of recommendations I've had have stuck with me as well. Golden Sun, Suikoden, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc - please don't think I'm disregarding the BIG games that many are interested in. I'm looking forward to covering as many of these as I possibly can, but they're quite time-consuming and demand a lot of mental energy as well. Honestly, I LOVE working, but I find I'm at my best with writing & editing when it's something that I'm personally invested in - a game that I've REALLY had the compulsion to explore. So, I tend to wait for those moments before I dive in.

Lastly, I just wanted to mention that I've been thinking of some bonus videos for Patreon. Stuff that doesn't necessarily fit in with my other main channel content. I've got a few topics jotted down that I'm interested in talking about, perhaps in a podcast-y format? Something like a "Soulsbornering" tier list (and other tier lists as well) also strike me as something simple & fun for you folks. If you have any ideas that you believe would fit the bill, please don't hesitate to let me know! I'm always looking to sweeten the pot, make sure you feel like you're getting some value out of this Patreon arrangement.

Thanks again for your continued support, appreciate you all!

Release valve angle makes perfect sense too! Excited for whatever comes down the pike

I've def thought of doing something like an unedited chat about a game I've already covered or am interested in. And of course, I'd make sure to not let it burn me out. If anything, I think it'd be a nice release valve to make something low pressure and simple. Thanks for the suggestions and input!

I'm so happy you're doing the silly-ass Zeldas lol. If you ever did a Golden Sun video, there would actually be poo in my pants. First one and Lost Age are easily my favorite GBA games

I'm parroting all the other comments -- I don't feel like you really need to sweeten the pot. I already feel like I'm getting my money's worth. I could def understand the angle of wanting to make the Patreon more appealing to non-subscribers though, so I trust your judgment. For me though I just like knowing that I'm helping a bit to support the creation of more video essays like the ones you've made already. Podcasty stuff is always welcome, and I agree that tier lists would be fun and (hopefully) easy. If there's ever any aspect from a game you've covered that you'd like to go back to and talk about in a quick and less polished way, like that 3DO Bonus video, that would be super neat too. Highlight reels from streams could also be fun--I don't usually get to fit those into my schedule so I'm always curious what I'm missing out on. Whatever it is (if anything), I would just wanna make sure it doesn't burn you out from working on the bigger vids! Keep up the awesome work 🫑

Bro, you’re a glutton for punishment taking on the CDI Zeldas. You could say, it’s *Whimsical* That part in the Shadow Hearts review broke and stuck with me πŸ˜‚

As other people have said, my patronage comes from the love of historic content. That said if you feel inclined to make bonus content, the idea of a tier list of the games you have currently reviewed could be very interesting. Tier lists such as the production experience, the music, the gameplay, the story. It is all ultimately subjective but gives a bit more insight into your preferences too.

re: bonus content anything in audio format would b rly cool (and probably a bit less intensive than bonus videos) but like others have said im putting money forth to be supportive, not from an explicit desire for bonus content. loved the vid working through the last third of it rn actually :)

If you're looking for a structure with a King's Field video, perhaps a genre spanning look would do you better? Compare and contrast the finer elements and directions of King's Field, it's contemporaries at the time, and maybe even use the topic as a means to talk about Games like Lunacid, which is a kind of spiritual successor that recently appeared on the market! Perhaps there's a question you want to ask that games in this genre can answer? Perhaps there's an aesthetic or theme that you want to highlight amidst all these first person dungeon crawlers? I'm spitballing here, but hopefully there's something helpful there!

I hear that. I imagine the types of things I would post here would be videos that wouldn't take more than an afternoon or so to edit together. I actually really liked making the 3DO leftovers vid and it's a nice way to add variety to my workflow.

Also Rukimin stream

As an actual comment, from my perspective I don't care if you don't put anything up here, it's just about supporting your ability to create. In terms of attracting new supporters I think there are a ton of things you could do but it would just depend on if it's something you actually enjoy/how much time would it consume/how much would putting it here limit it's reach when it could otherwise grow your visibility.

Mistakes may have been made

Some bells can't be un-rung, think very carefully about what you're demanding πŸ€”

I demand lewd pictures for my Patreon funds

That's a great idea, I often find funny little things while writing/editing that don't fit in the main video. I'll see about trimming them into some actual content. Appreciate that Jae!

Sounds cool! Personally I'm not too worried about getting "my money's worth" out of Patreon, I'm here because I liked the stuff you already do and wanted support that. I remember you posting a little snippet from Skies of Arcadia, which might be cool as you collect footage/edit, or if you were doing shorts it could be repurposed into that as well. Otherwise I'd focus on stuff that's fun and pretty easy so it doesn't end up feeling like a cumbersome obligation
