Ryzen 9800X3D RAM buying guide.
Added 2024-11-14 07:34:59 +0000 UTCDO:
2x16GB DDR5-6000 CL30
2x24GB DDR5-6000 CL30
2x32GB DDR5-6000 CL30
2x48GB DDR5-6000 CL30
DO NOT:
4x16GB (unless you want your RAM to be slow)
4x24GB (unless you want your RAM to be slow)
4x32GB (unless you want your RAM to be EXTRA slow)
4x48GB (unless you want your RAM to be EXTRA slow)
REASONING:
- 6000 CL30 is a Hynix 16Gb A-die and Hynix 24Gb M-die bin.
- Hynix 16Gb A-die and 24Gb M-die are currently the best DDR5 memory chips for compatibility/stability/overclocking and performance
- Speeds higher than DDR5-6000 may default to 2:1 mode which is bad for performance.
- Some Ryzen 9000 series chips can't run DDR5-6400 or 6200 in 1:1
- DDR5-7600+ performance wise is a viable alternative to DDR5-6000 however it's more dependant on motherboard quality. DDR5-6000 should work on basically anything. Many boards can't do DDR5-7600. Some CPUs can't do DDR5-8000
- If you want more performance you can always just overclock the 6000 CL30 kit instead of buying a DDR5-6400+ kit that you might have to underclock if your CPU/motherboard can't run it.
BTW:
DDR5 6000 CL36 is Samsung or Micron
Comments
the thing is while a lot of 6000C30 kits are A-die they aren't ALL A-die. Sometimes you still get 16Gb M-die in that speed.

2024-12-29 11:26:46 +0000 UTCThanks, does that hold true for 2x32gb kits as well?

2024-12-29 06:36:18 +0000 UTCWait a sec- does that make this buying guide out of date? It's suggesting 2x16 6000 CL30. That's different from this most recent reply.

2024-12-29 04:40:44 +0000 UTCanything rated 2x16 rated 6800 C34 or better. Like 7200C34 7600C36 7800C36 8000C38

2024-12-28 15:35:31 +0000 UTCHey, any plans on doing a “what ddr5 to buy” update? Struggling to figure out how I can ensure I’m getting Hynix A-die

2024-12-28 15:21:27 +0000 UTCAny thoughts on Lexar's new CL26 kits?

2024-12-22 01:45:35 +0000 UTCGskill cl30 6000 I got was an M-die. i can do 6400 1:1 and 8000 2:1 using the memory try it botton on the x870e Carbon. just starting overclock the ram so this is going to be a xmas thing. with a 9800x3d chip. i just got the ram Gskill 30-38-38-38

2024-12-16 02:19:51 +0000 UTCMore testing and Acer kits show the same BSODs. It seems my 9800X3D and ROG X670E Extreme board just cannot handle RAMs at 6000MT/s in a stable manner. Downclocking RAM speed to 5800MT/s seems to solve the instability issue. It's less than ideal of course, but I do not know what else I can do.

2024-11-20 11:09:27 +0000 UTCother than motherboard incompatibility and thus having to underclock ram to make it stable. is there any other reason why 4x16gb should be slower? I'm running 4x16gb cl28 6000 with your timings no issues but wondering if I f'd up and should've waited for 32gb sticks to come back in stock lol

2024-11-18 23:15:24 +0000 UTCthat's very odd but IDK what would cause that without being able to check what the board is doing.

2024-11-17 00:55:26 +0000 UTCBoth XMP and EXPO kits are 6000 CL30-40-40-96-1.4 V. Model numbers are F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5NR and F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5RS.

2024-11-17 00:47:41 +0000 UTCI would recommend never using any kind of AUTO CPU OC. But it's kinda odd to me that the G.skill kits would have issues. What voltage are they?
Actually Hardcore Overclocking (Buildzoid)
2024-11-16 16:55:34 +0000 UTCThis might somehow be a G.Skill issue. I have swapped G.Skill RAMs for Acer ones and there is no BSOD so far if EXPO alone is turned on (which means I cannot turn on Asus AI OC by setting CPU Core Ratio to AI Optimised otherwise it consistently leads to BSOD).

2024-11-16 13:56:46 +0000 UTCYour my first patreon sub so I could ask this lol: What about timings..? Which I knew close to nothing about since 10 min ago. You recommend 7600mhz as a viable alternative; the lowest CL is 36 on those..

2024-11-16 00:31:59 +0000 UTCTried both Trident Z5 (DOCP) and Trident Z5 Neo (EXPO) 6000 CL30 and while Neo is a bit better it is still highly unstable

2024-11-15 08:57:11 +0000 UTCHi i just finished my new build. With msi x870 tomahawk 9800x3d and 8400ddr5 gskill . But i could it run even at xmp1 it didn’t boot at all. Honestly I don’t know anything about over clocking. How can i run my ram at their full speed?

2024-11-15 08:57:05 +0000 UTCAsus ROG Crosshair X670E Extreme; EXPO/DOCP turned on = random BSOD/freeze/reboot, the system does boot in most cases.
W
2024-11-15 08:55:54 +0000 UTCwhat motherboard? and by at all do you mean EXPO/XMP doesn't work or the system doesn't boot at all?
Actually Hardcore Overclocking (Buildzoid)
2024-11-15 08:44:21 +0000 UTCMy specific 9800X3D refuses to run GSkill at 6000 CL30 at all...

2024-11-15 08:06:39 +0000 UTCSilicon lottery. So it's completely random
Actually Hardcore Overclocking (Buildzoid)
2024-11-15 07:07:04 +0000 UTCSorry but which 9000 CPUs do not run 6400/6200 in 1:1? Unit-specific?

2024-11-14 18:15:53 +0000 UTCthere's no down sides. They just cost more.

2024-11-14 18:09:44 +0000 UTCOh I guess 16Gb M-die is still kinda common then. Not like it matters much for 1:1 mode

2024-11-14 15:39:14 +0000 UTCHey, what about cl28 6000mhz are they good? I know they are more expensive but I already bought them because I like how they look. G Skill Trident Z Royal 🥺
