Klay and Wiggs just look off to me. I sort of understand why Klay might be in a weird state (contract talks), but Wiggs? What's his deal? Anyone heard rumors?

They dominated Sac on the boards because Looney is amazing and punked Sabonis. Outrebounding the Lakers in total for the series yeah sure. That stat doesnt tell the whole story. Rim protection, length and size affecting shot selection and decision making towards the rim. What was the free throw desparity on them attacking the rim?
It obviously isnt the only problem with this roster. Adding size doesnt suddenly make them unbeatable, but youre the simpleton if you think this team DOESNT have a size issue. OR may you just completely missed the Spurs preseason game? Or maybe you just completely forgot Eubanks turning away everyone at the rim? Or maybe you missed Okogie getting every loose ball? Or maybe you forgot Alex Len being actually better on defense for the Kings than Sabonis?
I didnt say its the only issue with the team. But it is a real issue and if TJD doesnt start getting significant minutes, every team with an even remotely serviceable backup big is gonna eat us alive, just like Eubanks did.

Not too upset about the loss altogether.. and unfocused steph won’t last.. the most alarming thing is Wiggins and klay… klay looks like he’s declining FAST and I’m starting to question if this is the Wiggins experience that Minnesota dealt with.. if those guys can’t step it up.. kuminga and moody need to get more minutes

Great breakdown Alch. Hadn't noticed Kerr's questionable defensive assignments to start the game, awful decision. On the plus side, it was great to see his willingness to give Moody and JCool meaningful minutes (more please!). Given the way their bigs were killing us, I wouldn't have minded giving Trayce a look. And, staying on the coaching theme, I think Kerr talks a good game about "minutes for whomever's playing well" but doesn't that really only apply to players who aren't named Thompson or Curry? Overall performances: all of the starters seemed stuck on auto-pilot (especially Wiggs and Curry): dragging their feet after missed shots, several blown lay-ups, and botched box-outs and switches. Sure, just one game, but I feel like the underlying problem from last year is still very much present. We're no longer so much better than the other teams that we can play half-hearted ball and coast to victories with the engine in neutral. At a certain point those brain farts become in insurmountable obstacle. Sure, we were still in the game but the Suns were without BB and KD had a pretty quiet night. Bottom line is that we got bossed around by their bigs, out-hustled by their no-name guys, and out shined by Booker (again).

Also I really like the CP minutes, especially without Steph on the court. We were 2 CP threes made (33% for the night) away from calling last night a huge success. We were last in fouls drawn and free throws taken last hear, I think CP and Kuminga would change that by themselves

The harsh truth is that Klay used to be the greatest 3D player in NBA history, and his ability covered up the fact that all his other guard skills (ball handling, playmaking, self-creation) were way below NBA standard for a guard. Now since his athleticism has declined, he's being exposed. If I'm the GM, all things considered, 2200M per is my absolute limit for his next extension

Curry can be 10/10 with 30 pts in a quarter, and Kerr will sub him out because "rOTaTiOnS nEeD tO Be KePT". Fucking hell that was annoying. Curry FINALLY gets in a rhythm and Kerr takes him out immediately. Yeah its only game 1 so youre managing minutes and whatever, but dont you want your star player to KEEP a rhythm in game 1?? Damn, for YEARS I've been critical of Lebron being someone who would never relinquish the controls of his own system as he aged and it's made him so often look goofy on defensive possessions and as a leader, but we may be facing the same exact arc with Steph now. The arc of "saving energy to be the icon off the court" always results in lapses of leadership in the X's and O's. It's why MJ fuckin' retired so damn much. The only thing was that I was always hoping Steph would be protected against this by a great team around him. But CP's presence on defense (though he's been awesome on offense), Klay's regression and Wiggins' lack of ownership (very similar to the situation Lebron finds himself in with AD. If AD was a consistent monster, it would mean even MORE longevity for an already timeless Bron) worries me because it's throwing Steph's unique winning prowess into flux. Those unique responsiblities are always gonna get weird as you get older, and we may finally be seeing the team not figure out how to manage it. Hopefully it's just that Draymond is a really important key to this formula. But I'm worried.

Well well well.....if it isnt exactly what I said would happen. Funny thing happens when you run a bunch of 5'3 guys against 6'4 guys in an open gym. Even if the 5'3 guys are REALLY good, there is absolutely NOTHING to make up for the size disparity. The Suns are even far from the tallest or longest team in the league, but we are without a doubt the smallest and the shortest. And what happened? EVERY SINGLE MEANINGFUL REBOUND went to the taller/longer team. The sad part is, it wasnt even an effort issue.
I actually appreciate how everyone was TRYING to get box out and gang rebound, but again. No amount of effort/IQ/skill can make up for sheer size, and the Golden State Midgets are a prime example of that. If we just get TWO of those rebounds that ended up being an offensive rebound and a butt naked 3 for the Suns, we win this game.
My head was ready to explode watching EVERY GODDAMN loose ball be batted straight up into the air, 3 warrior jerseys all scratching, clawing, fighting, and jumping as high as their tiny little legs can jump...............only for 1 single Suns player to catch it with one hand like a high schooler playing against kindergarteners.
That was really fucking annoying. I apologize for the negativity. This is leftover residual anger from the niners game. I really needed a Bay Area team win after that game and they failed me lol.
Outside of that. That game was actually there for the taking. The whole team smoked like 20 layups. That was also very fucking annoying watching everyone miss layup after layup after layup. But thats more or less expected on opening night, so while thats annoying, I can understand the sluggishness. Missing wide open layups can be worked on throughout the season. But no ones getting any taller.
Speed round breakdown:
- Kuminga looked good when he wasnt committing fouls every 10 seconds.
- Moody looked awesome.
- Paul led the second unit well.
- Saric looked decent.
- Kontract Klay game 1.......no comment. We will see how this goes.
- Severely missed Draymond defensively.
- Our bench seemed to better than last year so that was nice to see.
- Why did we keep Corey Joseph???? I hate Kerr's obsession with these random ass 6ft guards that do nothing. Might as well give Jeremy Lamb a call.
Overall. Annoying loss. But we hung around with KD and Book and probably shouldve won. But dear god, even the most trash 7 footers in this league will walk all over us. Eubanks was looking like a goddamn all star against us. Please for the love of god, if we are gonna run "experimental" lineups, use TJD. PLEASE.

Would featuring him on offense makes him get going easier? I don’t like how they constantly run sets for Klay that are not really effective anymore while Wiggins is just an after thought. Should be the opposite where Klay sits in the corner or as a decoy more. It’s on Kerr and the core guys, Money Mike has done his job

Most of our free throws came in the 3rd when we were in the bonus early with like 5:30 left in the quarter. We just continued to draw cheap fouls, something we hardly ever saw last season. You are right about Looney playing alongside CP3, it doesn't fully utilize CP3's skills as a playmaker. CP3 needs to play alongside a rim runner/vertical spacer like TJD. With the return of Draymond, its also going to push down Moody and Kuminga's minutes but I hope I'm wrong because we need their energy.

Not the opening night we wanted, but it is just one game. I want to believe we will be better once Draymond returns so CP3 can manage the bench unit. I’m not loving the lineups with Steph, Klay, and CP3 bc they’re slow and negative defensively. Wiggins looks like MN Wiggins right now, and I hope he turns it around quickly. None of the starters had a great overall game. Looney was okay, but he doesn’t seem to be a fit with CP3 bc he can’t roll and finish like most of Paul’s P & R partners usually do.

Draymond's presence helps on both sides tonight and Steph not getting into foul trouble obviously does help, but watching the other teams play tonight, it feels like we have a real uphill battle.
Last year we probably get blown out of this game, so we did make better improvements, but I'm wondering if there is a trade to be made to compete more now, bc in a series I still don't see how we beat Denver, Lakers, and Suns. It's only one game but most of our main issues were present.

One instant takeaway: It was great to see us get to the FT line more than usual lol.
A few things to note. Steph was bad on D, much worse than I realized, but I'll cut him a bit of slack because of him having to play next to CP3/CoJo, it just doesn't work on that end. Another stat just to take in...
Steph touches per game (2022-23): 79.3
CP touches per game (2022-23): 74.5
Curry last night: 62.0
Paul last night: 88.0
I just don't think they should be playing next to each other much. It not only makes Steph guard up, but zaps some of his offense because he doesn't have the ball as much. It historically has only worked well with another wing/big holding the ball more (Dray/KD).
Klay and CP also played way too many mins, can't be happening on a regular basis. Solvable though. Play Moody and Kuminga more, save the vets legs. Wiggs looked terrible too, maybe he's got low competitive stamina like you said, hopefully we see very few games like that from him the rest of the year. Klay shot poorly, but played good D and made mostly good decisions.
All in All though, I liked what I saw for the most part. We lost by 4 with a lot going wrong. I would like to see Kerr use our depth more though, and have better rotations/lineups. Last year we didn't have it, now we do. Go to it, and it will solve a lot of issues. Plus we have 2 roster spots open, and we can always make trades.
My b for the long comment, just excited for this season. Good breakdown!

Needed more mins from the youth tonight, Steph klay Wiggs were either mentally not locked all the way in or just didn’t have the juice.
Energy immediately flipped once Moody GP2 and Kuminga checked in the 2nd. Disruptive and energetic with a lot of length and athleticism. CP running the show with that bench should destroy most teams’ second units.
Some TJD and Podz would’ve been nice (instead of Cory) with the lack of rebounding. Those 2 have a nose for the ball and with Loon not all the way in mid season form could’ve used that athleticism from TJD.
Optimistic though seeing as the bench should be dominant and you’d expect the starters to get their shit together especially once Draymond’s back. It did not feel like we put up 40 in the third since everything was so choppy but CP showed his worth stabilizing us and getting us back in the game.

Was at the game and I would have to say that Wiggins in particular did not look ready to play. The young guys effort and energy showed out pretty easily, would have been nice to see if TJD would have helped with the rebounding. Playing Steph and CP3 will be crap when it comes to role playing guards who are in there to play d and crash the boards. That being said: This is a game we lose by 20 last year, Steph playing poorly and in foul trouble. CP3 came in and kept things moving and stabilized. Dubs missed at least 10 layups. First wave of D was ok but couldn't close of the possessions with rebounds. Young guys brought much needed energy, liked to see Kuminga out there as you could definitely see his mentality on the boards, both offensive and defensive. This will be an interesting year!

A little off topic... KD was apparently advocating for the Warriors to retire his jersey and it got me thinking... it's actually really sad because we are the only franchise that would even consider doing this. On paper it seems like a slam dunk, but the more I think about it...
1. He's been going against us a lot longer than he was playing for us.
2. He still hates on bay area media and blames them for being a part of the reason he left. Sensitive much? If he had just ignored that hype and locked in with the warriors, him and draymond would have never gotten in that spat and they might be trying to get their 4th title together this year. Then you're definitely hanging in the rafters and in the GOAT conversation.
3. To be honest, retiring his jersey just doesn't quite seem right. I feel that there are a handful of players I'd rather see retired # who did more for the franchise. I'm thinking of Monta and J Rich. Sure, they aren't as talented, but both fought tooth and nail for the warriors over a much longer period of time.
KD grabbed a couple of rings and then bounced.
