I think people are overreacting to JK’s last two games. He’s improved every year so the smart money bet is that he’ll improve again this year. I think his motor kinda sucks, but he’s a high character guy and a willing defender - my (irrational?) optimistic take is that with more time on the floor he’s gonna get more help on his defensive skill issues.

I think it's both, the main issue being bball IQ. His doesn't function fast enough even in this rampant fast style which is hurting his offense, and he's always dozed off defensively. I think he can be a very good player, just somewhere else where they play a more generic offense and aren't competing for a chip where they need the defense to be elite.

Continued gratitude, Alch!
Wiggs’ transformation is a powerful human story, and I’m incredibly happy for this guy. He’s damn fun to watch again!
That fade away by Podz was the first real jumper I’ve seen him take, and it looks solid. Mo dat!
The team D energy is what’s knocking me out and giving me playoff optimism. It’s sustainable and travels, and I can see it running good squads, full of size, off the court. We’re about to find out.
JK’s lack of feel/instincts probably goes back to starting hoops later than most kids. In .5 O and elite team D, so much depends on quick decision making, and it’s simply not there yet. If he’s not living with game video 24/7, he’s never going to reach anywhere near that max $ he wants, but I’m rooting for him. The spotlight is dialed up right now, and sadly I put a lot of blame on his agent, as part of that gig is counseling a client on actual market value, comparables, and positioning. Turning down $30 per and risking that offer being pulled off the table? Highly questionable agent dynamic in my book.
Damn fun ride so far!!!

My biggest take aways: buddy is way better than Klay is since Klays injuries, buddy sprints the floor better than anyone on the team which opens everything up, and he hustles on defense way better than Klay has for years. I've never seen kevon move like this, that under the basket dunk he had was the quickest standstill jump I've seen him make. The new death lineup is that one with Steph, podz, buddy, gp2, and kevon. The speed and quickness mixed with shooters and play finishers was wild. May be matchup dependent, but that lineup looked killer.

I agree with u Alch, stay with JK starting until he plays better because right now we need him playing well to shop him if we are taking trade offers which I believe we are. If we demote him we won't get as much. It's his mind that isn't right so far, he gets beat left too often, doesn't have good timing shot blocking, passing isn't there, and generally doesn't have good instincts. Yes he might come around to some extent, but no damn way are we giving him what he wants in money right now so we have to shop him, sad though as he's so fun to watch when he's playing well.
Russ

Thanks for the breakdown Alch. While GPII has always had a lot in his bag as far as passing and court vision, to me it seems like he's stepping that part of his game even more this year. My thinking is it is due to he knows he only has so much left in the tank in terms of being 'elite' physically, seeing the Dubs pick up Melton, knowing Podz is going to continue improving, etc. so GP has worked on refining his dribbling and passing. Not to say it wasn't already good, just seems like it is taking another step. Is this noticeable by others?

You’re right…but at the end of the day we need solid interchangeable wings to get to the promised land…Wiggs can’t do it by himself….either find trades or just let them play through mistakes for 1-2 months…playing it safe didn’t help the last few years…expecting leaps without playing real minutes is a mirage…i’m all for trading kuminga tbh…let him get his money in a tanking team…i hate the way kerr and the FO are inviting those conflicting interests in the locker room

2024-10-27 06:52:27 +0000 UTC
I think Moody's issue is he probably needs to see the court more. Kuminga man... I don't know. I think he's just not focused on the right things. His fundamentals are off for me and his floor game leaves much to be desired. The issue with Kuminga is you can tell he doesn't like to defend. He likes to put up numbers and get to highlights, so he doesn't really play disciplined. And it's tough, b/c that might just be who he is as a player. I doubt he starts putting more mental effort into defense and into his floor game unless he sees like 30 minutes a night, which probably can't happen on a roster constructed like this while he's playing like that...
Lenny
2024-10-27 06:45:13 +0000 UTC
I been saying this for a hot minute. Kuminga's problems are mainly on defense. I'm not sure why he keeps putting out videos every offseason showing that he's working on his bag, because the main reason he's hard to put on the court is b/c his defense is just not it.

This team feels like it has the spirit of a scrappy college team. Love it so far. Hoping it’s real and lasting.
I’m a Johnny-come-lately Dubs fan; fell in love with them first because of Steph, but then especially because of the way they played this beautiful game.
It sounds corny, but the Warriors at their height were Love embodied in a basketball team. No egos, putting the team above self, and finding more joy in the assist and the help side D than in individual success. Self-sacrificial and other-centered. That’s what made their game so beautiful, and so successful.
This squad has the chance to embody the same ethos; Love expressed through sport. I hope they embrace it, and can’t wait to see how far they can go.
Sorry to be over the top. I know I sound silly. But if ball is life, and the source of Life is Love, then what I’m saying makes perfect sense 🙂.
Go dubs.

The bizarre thing about Kuminga’s game, is how does he get downhill so much less now than he did his rookie year? He obviously made a lot of mistakes back then too but he got so many highlight dunks in limited minutes and was super dynamic and fun to watch. Now I guess “the game has slowed down for him” but i feel like he’s slowed down so much he’s lost his superpower.
I think the warriors offense is just a bad fit for him. We all know it takes high bbiq to succeed and it just doesn’t seem like that will ever be him. Like look at his interviews, we all want to think it’s just the language barrier or being young but maybe he just doesn’t have that high iq that a lot of nba players do. I think his best bet is to attack harder and focus on developing feel and timing and creativity and letting loose his athleticism, kinda like a ja morant archetype rather than trying to reign himself in to fit in a complicated system.

Imagine Jazz fans judging Kuminga completely off this game like Warriors fans are doing for Lauri. Dude put up 35 & 9 against Memphis in the opener. He's not supposed to be number 1 option, he's supposed to be a Robin or a super charged 3rd option. He's on a squad with no point guard and no vets designed simply to flesh out young players and tank for Flag.
Stevie Ray
2024-10-26 23:19:55 +0000 UTC
Kuminga did himself no favors to quiet his doubters. Myself included. I will give him the 10-15 game pass to “warm up” and get in rhythm. But right now, it’s honestly crazy that he looks like our WORST player. And you want $200 mil????? Nah fam. Stay hard on him Alch, cuz I’m gonna do the same.
It’s hard to feel TOO good about these wins considering how terrible both teams are, but when I see that Memphis just barely beat Utah and Lauri went off in that game, it makes me feel a little better that we made him look like a scrub. But maybe Memphis is also bad???
Idk. Sunday will be the first test. But our first test vs a healthy playoff opponent is the Celtics and that’ll be a VERY interesting game.
We look good though, I can’t lie. And seeing this version of Wiggins, Looney, and GP2 all back. It’s making me believe. I’m sure I’ll be humbled when face a team with size like the Lakers or Wolves, but I’m actually feeling like our coaching Steve will make an adjustment! One can dream right?!?

I think JK just needs to demonstrate he's a better 3-point shooter. He hasn't hit one yet this regular season, maybe it's best for him to stand in the corner to open the game and shoot the wide open ones that get swung his way. As for Buddy, I think he's best suited for that 6th man role. If he wins that award, he's going to get a significant contract this offseason.

Obviously, the first 2 games were against what could end up being the 2 worst teams in the West, but the margin of victory is what's so appealing. Straight up we NEVER blew out teams like this last year and it's a sign of the defense and transition offense going up a level.

JK is a leopard with exceptional agility, speed, and power. A mini LeBron but with an assassin's mindset like a leopard. Leopards have versatile hunting skills, stealth, and ability to adapt to different terrains.

My opinion on changing the starting line up is that you start with Trayce, ask Dray to tough it up and run first 4 minutes of each half at C so we can still start Kuminga(then we can sub Kuminga out early to put someone at C next to dray). Like even if the defense is great, we cannot go that far without a guy who can score at all star level, which is probably either Wiggins or Kuminga. In our 2022 I would argue that Poole score at an all star level especially when he was playing with curry. Also we had certain x and o advantage on both end that we didn't have anymore. Back to scoring, even 2022 Wiggins doesn't score at an all-star level well so I believe our best bet is Kuminga turn into 1. Now, there is no guarantee that he does but we won't have a chance this year if he doesn't.
Regarding the slow start, I think it's just no one was making shot early in both games including Steph. And everyone only start hitting 3s after Hield start hitting 3s so the plus minus might be little bias against Kuminga.

I've experienced that, when a loved one is given like a year to live etc. It's really hard. It's like being in emotional prison and it's very hard to function normally at work and just in life. Yes but its early. He is different and GSW has to find ways to use his elite skills to let him adjust to the scrutinizing prying eyes like Alc's.
BTW Alc I encourage you to be critically hard on players but try avoid being harsh or even unfair. You seem to overly compare where JK is 2 ganes in, to Wiggs a 29 year old super veteran who was drafted 1st overall and for more years than JK been in the league was considered a bust. I wish ppl would stop saying Wiggs and JK can't play the same time. Steph and Buddy does. Steph and Podski does. JK is still effectively 20 in his soft more season, the injustice Kerr did in his minutes play all those two way players over JK and Moody for 2 years. Madness.
Everyone hype up on new adrenaline right now. No young individual really balling but TJD and the Vets besides Dray can't say much more. Strength in numbers dominating.
Kerr ask JK to push the ball and shoot fast so we can't get made if JK takes a quick 17 sec in shot clot 3 from the corner. If it when in the coaches would be clapping saying thats what we want.
One or two power dunks and a few turn around kiddies and JK will be right back to Ballin as he did last year when Wiggs was out of it. Clippers game is a good on for Kerr to feed JK downhill all game. Let him break a sweat.

The biggest change may have been the coaching change. May sound hyperbolic, but I thought the coaching was the worst in the entire league last season.
I don't think Buddy should ever be a starter, he's just too weak defensively. The goal should be to look at Melton or Pod and see who can start (Melton is likely the answer), then you can also move Wiggins at the 3 where he belongs. Team looks good, what did James Harden says a few years back?
Scary hours.

I could be wrong but wasn't Kuminga bad in the beginning of last year too, looking clueless. He hasn't played a lot of basketball so maybe he just needs more 5v5 reps regain/grow some of that BBIQ. Right now Kuminga looks like a candidate to be traded, but who could we get for him who really moves the needle? Maybe something materializes, but our best hope so far is still for Kuminga to find his footing. He doesn't even need to be a $200mil star, just a good & active fit in our offense and a smarter player on defense.

Obviously his dad's illness was a huge weight on him, but I'm also starting to think Wiggins needs good vibes to maximize his potential. Maybe his competitive stamina is lacking when he's just playing for himself, because he has a chip and more money than he could ever need... but when he has a great group of teammates surrounding him, he's extra motivated because he wants them to succeed as well. 2022 had great vibes, and he was great. 2023 (the punch) and 2024 (Klay's woes) didn't, and he struggled with his effort. I’d like Kerr to run a play for Kuminga starting off next game. Just gotta keep his head in the game because we’ll need him when going up against a strong perimeter defensive team

GPII for TJD against that length is mind boggling.

This lineup is taking away JK’s strength by clogging the lane on offense. If Kerr is coaching him and he overcomes it, it will become the ceiling lineup.

Kuminga vs the Blazers he was rushed, here he was too passive trying to stay out the way (Like the Curry behind the back turnover), he’s trying to adjust on fly. Like last season I was not impressed with the creativity in using Kumingas skill set. Nobody except Heild has been hot in these games whether Kuminga was out there or not either, so changing the lineup would cause unnecessary turbulence when Curry is missing layups, Wiggins is missing layups and hooks, and the bench is firing on all of one cylinder. Keep it rolling, but the staff has to use him better while he has to work to balance out his play, they need to be extra sure to work with Kuminga and not panic and start the yanking without communicating like the first half of last season.
