Philosophy Series: Hegel, Marx, & Modern Life (Part 1)

Breht listens to, comments on, and expounds upon a public lecture by the late professor of philosophy Rick Roderick from 1989 on Hegel, Marx, and modern American capitalism. Along the way he explicates the Hegelian notion of Freedom, Right and Left Hegelianism, the End of History, Communism as the Dawn of Real History, Cognitive Dissonance among the American People, Moral Critiques of Capitalism, Contradictions within Ideology, Dialectical Inversions of Liberal Pretense, and much more.

haha no i appreciate that clarification immensely. Very interesting. I hope my basic point stands regardless of the historical error of using that as an analogy! Thank you. Good point about roman decadence and elite concentration - and that point its not even an anology, its just a straightforward repetition of past iterations of class society at a higher level.

Breht I hate to be a pedant, but a vomitorium was just a passageway through public venues (like coliseums) , where crowds would 'spew forth' into the space. We still have those; we jusr don't call them "vomitoriums" anymore A better example of Roman decadence would be the concentration of land in the hands of a small clique of elites, who grew fat on the exploitation slave and citizen alike.

You continue to do things others don't. Your means of conveying theory to us is very well articulated. This was a fun trip back to the early 90s, brother. Keep it up! Fantastic episode.

Lars
