I cut it in half.

Hey guys! I've been hard at work since returning from my tour two weeks ago and I've finished tracking for the big project that put the really big project on the back burner. Replay 2024 is slowly turning into needing to be Replay 2025 but I'm really happy with how this one ends and want to keep it unless something really good comes out soon with music that I think will represent all of this year. I think Rift of the Necrodancer would be too self indulgent. 😂

For those that don't know Rifft of the Necrodancer just released and I have 6 original songs that came out for that so go check them out! In the meantime I am working on creating some content for the main channel around those songs to tide you guys over so look out for that.

As for Replay, the arrangement has been cut down from 45 minutes to 22 minutes in length, and almost a third of the songs have changed and I want to share with you the current state!

THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN!
I would love some feedback on it. I'm attaching three files here.

First Phase of Replay:
During this segment I will be playing the games with a controller and the metal music is the background of the games. It took some careful arrangement to get this to work. This will also make the beginning make much more sense I think. Let me know what you think!

The Rest of Replay:
Here is the full pre-mixed but fully tracked version of Replay 2024. I'd love for you to give it a listen and let me know what you think, if there's some stuff you think could make it better, but most importantly, let me know if you feel the song choices are strong, yet utilizes enough to make this one different enough from the first two iterations.

The Songlist:
Here is the list of games used. What I'd love to know is if you know the game but didn't know the song I used or it didn't sond familiar at all. I probably will not be listing the song name in the video so it's crucial that the song is familiar to those who played it.

There's a few things I'm a bit unhappy with that I'd love feedback on. The most important is I really tried to keep it one franchise limit, but I had a very hard time finding better candidates for 1985, 1996, and 2007 which are all Mario titles. I figure Mario is kind of an exception, but if I can find better songs that I haven't used before in Replay I'd love to try it and see if they'd fit with the transitions between songs. Even though this is recorded, I could technically still record new songs.

Also let me know if there's a song you felt could have worked better to represent video games as a whole than the ones I chose. I'm very open to feedback and want this to be the best it can be. Let me also know if you have any candidates for a 2025 song!

In conclusion, take a listen to the above and let me know:

1. Did you recognize all the songs from games you were familiar with?

2. Do you have any ideas for games and songs to replace the last two Mario titles?

3. Were there any songs you felt did not represent the history of video games and give me a counter game and song that's franchise wasn't used otherwise.

4. Were there any parts that you felt were missing from the songs or ways I could improve them?

You can leave a comment here, or have a conversation with me about it in the discord channel in the #patreon room! Thank you for your respectful feedback!

Thank you so much everyone for listening and helping out. I want to make this third iteration of this idea the absolute biggest thing on the channel thus far! As this is a lot of content I'm releasing for Patreon exclusive access, this will be a charged post, let me know if you have any issues with that. Thank you!

Comments

I'll have the game titles, just probably not the song names. Thank you!

I share the previous comments on Tetris: Song B is a good track, but most people don't recognize it. If you have the games in the background like you showed in Part 1 I think people will get it. On the other hand: is there a reason you don't want to have the game titles in the video? You could also just make chapters and/or add the list to the video description for the curious ones. For 1996 (SM64): what about the original Tomb Raider? But to be honest, I don't have a particular soundtrack for that in my head... Maybe Crash Bandicot is indeed better. Overall, I didn't play enough games it seems. I only knew 10 of them and the newer ones didn't have a sticking soundtrack as the old ones. I still enjoyed it though.

Thank you!! I'll take this into consideration for the final version. Minecraft might just have to make a return.

The song list here is absolutely amazing! The lineup for the end especially. It's cool to finally see NieR and FE3H in a Replay, given the music powerhouses. and just amazing games overall that they are. To answer your questions: 1. I recognized pretty much all the songs, for the most part. I think a couple were definitely not the immediately recognizable ones, despite still being great songs. I feel like Tetris pretty much has the ONE song that it's famous for, and most people might not know the other one. PvZ was cool to see, but the song took me a minute to recognize. Again, not a bad choice, just not the most popular, I think. Finally, Skyrim was one that weirdly threw me off. I couldn't quite place the song, despite the ridiculous amount of time spent playing the game. Other than that, they were great choices. The only other one I'd mention is Fire Emblem, only because the melodies of songs like Edge of Dawn and Apex of the World are pretty similar, so it's not immediately obvious between those two, but not really a huge deal. 2. That one's tough. Looking at the games for those years, it's hard to argue any of them taking the Mario games' spots, even though there are three of them. In my opinion, it works as it is, just because I think the each of the Mario games was so impactful in a unique way for that point in time, and the songs are pretty distinct. Basically, it doesn't feel like you just picked Mario 1, Mario 2, etc. 3. The one thing I'd mention for that is the obvious Minecraft exclusion, given that it's easily one of the most popular and well-known games of all time. I think PvZ is definitely not a bad choice by any means, so it's tough decision. I know the previous Replay included it, so this does offer something new. Overall, I think it's just a question of how important is representing the history of video games vs. including something different for this version. Obviously that's entirely up to your judgment. 4. No complaints here, I think the clips all represented the songs pretty well. That's all I've got. Overall, sounds absolutely amazing. I'm pretty thrilled about the picks for the last ten years (finally a Baldur's Gate 3 cover! Kinda). Great job, dude!

Awesome! I'll give it another listen tomorrow and see if there's anything else I want to add or adjust

Thank you! And fixed your discord role so you should see it now!

Certainly much more concise, which is good! I definitely don't want to be able to listen to Replay AND Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence at the same time and have them end together haha. But I love the concept you're going for with it! So, first thing I want to say is, this overall seems like a good selection of songs, but I'm very much not the person to say anything about games I haven't played. What I will say is that I think the game choices for 2009, 2012, and 2015 seem a bit... weird, I guess? I know you were constricted by your one game per franchise limit, so some of the other games that could fit in those spots wouldn't have abided by that rule (particuclarly 2012 which as you did for Replay 2020 was Fire Emblem: Awakening, but you also have Three Houses on here). However, for 2015, I'm a bit biased as Undertale is my favourite game of all time, but I think that's the better representation of 2015 than Witcher 3, even though Witcher 3 was a huge game that year too. Just on the basis that Undertale probably had a bigger impact on more people than pretty much any other indie game can say, and that's something worth acknowledging (probably do Hopes and Dreams if you do swap Witcher for Undertale, though). On the other two, Minecraft I think was overall the better choice for '09, but I don't really have a counter for 2012, it just seems like an odd choice to me and I can't pin-point what else it should be. But again, I can't say anything about games I haven't played, so take what I say with a bit of a grain of salt. The other thing I will say is, I think Tetris B is the better song, but Tetris A is the most iconic of the set. I know you've done it a trillion times, but Tetris A would probably fit better, more people will recognise it, and it'll probably represent the game better too. Now in terms of the Mario titles, for 1996 you could do Crash Bandicoot in place of Mario 64. That was a huge game for its time, and definitely had a massive impact on the Playstation fanbase. For 2007, honestly, I don't really know what else it could be. You did Portal previously, but I think that might be your best alternative to Galaxy. I suppose the last thing I want to touch on is that some of the transitions feel a bit jarring, the one that springs to mind is going from Street Fighter II into Sonic 2, something about that felt weird. A few of the other transitions felt weird too, but having made a not insignificant number of medleys in the past, I know it can be hard to make transitions work. Just something I think would need some polishing before release. That's kind of all I have. I will just tack on the end as well, I don't have access to the Patreon room in Discord; I have access to the Platinum Palace, but unless I've not looked hard enough, I can't find the normal Patreon room. Not a big deal, just wanted to mention that. Anyway, well done! I love it so far and am looking forward to the final release!
