New video! Neighbourhoods that are Illegal in North America

Hi everyone! I've uploaded my latest video to YouTube, and as a Patreon supporter, you get early access.

This video is about the interesting shops,  cafés, and restaurants that we find dotted all throughout residential neighbourhoods in Amsterdam. Having interesting places like this within walking distance is one of our favourite things about living here.

We've lived in places like this in other countries - I mention Taipei in the video - but this kind of urban design is illegal in almost all of the US and Canada, and I find that crazy.

Let me know what you think, in the comments!

I spent a few months in Berlin and one in Munich. Both are nice cities and although Berlin was way more affordable, I much prefer Munich. Are you thinking of emigrating as well?

Connor Widmaier

Connor, where in Europe did you spend time? I live in the US as well, and I share your American suburbia woes.

Ezra Sacks

Your videos give me hope. After some time in Europe, it's been back to American suburbia for me these past few months. I've tried my best to continue my bicycle-centric lifestyle but it can really be such a challenge. What I miss most is the human connection of actually seeing faces rather than metal monsters tearing down highway-wide arterial roads. Thanks for keeping the hope alive.

Haha. I wasn't actually sure if the YouTube compression was even good enough to be able to read those. I guess so! And good eyes! 😁

Ha, I would love to live on Car Bad Train Good Ave.

Nye

I guess that makes sense, but you would think that even rich white people would want to live near a convenience store for late night diaper shopping. And why haven't they backtracked yet when, as you mentioned, the old areas with a more European aspect are the most expensive and desired ones. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Very interesting as always.

You're from France, right? So zoning would be similar to the Netherlands. Zoning has a crazy history in the US and Canada, which is why I linked to the City Beautiful videos, instead of trying to explain it. There was the assumption that everyone would want to drive in the future, and it was also done to keep the poor people out. Plus some racism, too. It's crazy, looking back on it.

Jason

It seems like such a crazy principle, I don't get why zones would be made like this.
