New NJB: Traffic Lights!

My latest video is up on YouTube! I'm pretty happy with how this turned out, and it was great to have help from an actual transportation planner (Matt from BeyondTheAutomobile.ca) to help with the details, as well as to provide video from Canada (as I can't travel there myself right now).

Traffic lights are really smart in the Netherlands. It took me a while to realize that this kind of thing was even happening, because it's so transparent. And when I started researching the technologies used I was even more impressed. It's another one of those things that makes transportation here so much safer and more efficient.

My Dutch is good enough to understand that. Thank you so much for sharing! That's actually quite interesting to me, because I used to be quite interested in computer security, and I used to watch Def Con conference talks. It looks like the vulnerability is limited to the apps that are being used to give cyclists a green light. I am completely unsurprising that these apps are susceptible to this kind of thing, because it's exactly what you'd expect from apps made by companies that aren't really "tech" companies. At least the vulnerability is limited in scope (you can't do anything that would be dangerous), it's more like denial of service attack. Very cool! Thanks!

@notjustbikes how is your Dutch? https://nos.nl/l/2343025 today hackers will announce at Def Con that they were able to influence traffic lights - and for example send an unlimited number of cyclists to the traffic lights. So that's something that needs to be investigated 🧐😄

Yes! Sorry for the delay, I was on holiday. Here are some of the references I used when making this video (I just added them to the YouTube description, too - thanks for reminding me): Rood, groen en geel 75 jaar verkeerslichten in Amsterdam https://onsamsterdam.nl/rood-groen-en-geel VETAG / VECOM / SICS http://www.ssstechniek.nl/vetag-vecom-sics/ Nautikaris Korteafstandsradio (manufacture's website) https://www.nautikaris.com/products/telemetry/applications/kar-modem/ Verkeerslichtbeïnvloeding (Wikipedia) https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verkeerslichtbe%C3%AFnvloeding Korteafstandsradio (Wikipedia) https://www.wegenwiki.nl/Korteafstandsradio Groningen installs rain sensors for cyclists at traffic lights (The Netherlands) https://www.eltis.org/discover/news/groningen-installs-rain-sensors-cyclists-traffic-lights-netherlands-0

Actually, do you have any suggested further reading for this topic?
