Lothlorien Bow process

Thanks for sharing your thoughts :) I'll still think about it. Maybe I'll make an additional printable version out of PETG or NYLON where the bow will be straightened out a bit. In addition to how to cut the finished model, I will also need to figure out how to place the rod inside because the bow has a bend

I think it might be best to continue the way you are, without straightening. PLA, which most will use, might not like the constant tension in the long term. Of course to avoid the string being slack, it should have just enough tension when on the bow to be taunt. But straightening the bow to achieve this might be overkill/require too much tension to get the bow bent to a ‘natural’ state. It will all depend on how much you’ll straighten the bow, if it’s only a minimal amount it might be ok, but at that point visually it might not make much difference anyway. On a related note: how the bow will be cut/keyed might also impact its strength this time, more than on other models. Because if there constantly is a light tension in the material/seams from the string, there’s more chance for breakage in the long term.

This is an interesting question, I was thinking about string tension and at the moment I am making a bow model with such a bend as if the string was already tensioned, because I assumed that the PLA plastic might break under the tension of the string. It may be a good idea to straighten the bow model a little, so that after printing the model you can tighten it a little with a bowstring 🤔 What do you think?

I'm going to have to make a bowstring to attach to the prop. I presume the version you are designing is one that is 'under tension', with the curvatures of the bow being what they'd be when the bow is strung (but not drawn)?

Wondeful!
