Hello ^^ I'll keep it simple today, no silliness. I'm doing well, had a week off so I didn't draw a whole lot other than poking at a couple comms I had laying around... but I still managed to get some good stuff done, hope you like it~ 🧡
I've been reading a popular old novel called Gravity's Rainbow, it's a really wonderful one. I'm trying to make a habit of reading more instead of being snout-deep in You[Tube] all the time, and last year I set a new years resolution to read 5 novels. I read 4, and started a fifth (this one), which were Brave New World, The Stranger, Ubik, and Ulysses. All very good. I tend to like the larger, denser books as long as they're entertaining, like Ulysses and Gravity, I've found. They pack more of a punch per-page and emotionally they're a lot more engaging, they just require some patience and maybe a glossary website with some footnotes... I wish I had read Ulysses with footnotes... it's filled with like, in-jokes about Dublin in 1904 and one of the characters, Stephen Dedalus, will literally just go onnn and onnn for pages ranting in Latin about nothing in particular... it was easy to space out.
Gravy Rainbow (my nickname for it) is similarly chaotic in that a lot of it is somewhat stream-of-consciousness but it's a sci-fi(?) satire(???) novel set in 1944 right around the Battle Of The Bulge (owo) where behavioral psychologists are studying people with supposed extra-sensory perceptions in an attempt to predict and combat the bombing of London by Nazi forces... and there's maybe also a secret sci-fi superweapon (wikipedia calls it "the Black Device") hidden somewhere they're trying to track down... though I haven't gotten to that part yet.
It's suuuuuper good, it gets into shit like Rocket Science and 1940s Psychology Experiments and finds some very interesting niches to pick at and explore. Would HIGHLY highly recommend. There's at least one or two really funny but gross chapters tho involving a dominatrix and poopy stuff... so be warned. Otherwise it's been a super rewarding read so far.
Other books I wanna read this year include:
- 2010: Odyssey Two (the sequel to 2001) and its sequel "2061"
- Infinite Jest (I need to actually commit to it, I've tried to read it three times now but it's HUUUGE)
- The Invisible Man (because of the comm above :>)
and
- either No Longer Human or The Setting Sun (maybe both...?) by Osamu Dazai, which I expect to be VERY depressing, but I'm still interested....
and I have like ten more that I'll probably never get to...
I'll let you know if any of those end up being super good, but regardless, thank you for your support, I hope you're all doing well ^^ I'll keep feeding you all yummy art for as long as I am able~ 🧡
