Pitches wanted (politics, AI, transformations, etc.) | up to $1 per word

Francis Wade, Commissioning Editor at Noema Magazine, is looking for pitches:
Call for pitches — Noema Magazine seeks pitches for essays that offer original and compelling ideas and arguments on/around the following:
The future of crisis-afflicted political, economic and other systems (democracy, capitalism, etc)
The ways humans relate to the nonhuman world (in light of damages wrought)
The evolution of AI and our evolving relationship with it
The climate crisis (and ways of addressing it at a systems level)
The durability of the nation-state system (and what comes next)
Other topics that touch on the profound transformations shaping the 21st century.
A FEW THINGS TO NOTE:
The emphasis is on essays that explore conceptual shifts and/or routes forward on subjects of concern. Noema is an ideas-driven magazine, so think about the ideas (and the systems) powering whatever it is you want to write on, and how you can offer novel ways of re-examining and reimagining them.
Reportage will only be commissioned if the object of your reporting serves as a vehicle to explore larger issues of social transformation. Straight reported features on, for example, biodiversity loss, rogue AI or human rights violations aren't right for the magazine (important as they are), unless they're the launchpad for an original inquiry into the ideas/systems driving them.
The best way to get a sense of the kinds of things Noema publishes is to read the website — noemamag.com — and to look at the work of the Berggruen Institute, out of which the magazine came.
If you feel you have something that might work, please send a pitch of c.400 words to francis@noemamag.com. I aim to reply to everyone, though it can take a bit of time. Feel free to share.
CONFIDENTIAL NOTE: Reports indicate that Noema Magazine pays up to $1 per word. It is recommended that you discuss the rate(s) with the editor upon the acceptance of your pitch.
