Arpeggio Lesson!

Hey friends! In this video I discuss how to get started outlining chord changes using chord tones. I demonstrate how to map out chord tones using arpeggio shapes and applying them to a simple 3 chord blues progression. The chords are A7, D7 , and E7. I will post diagrams showing the arpeggios for each of the 3 chords in all 5 positions in my next post. Enjoy!

Thanks Jack. This is a revelation.

When you were practicing as a wee guitar lad, would you practice one shape then goto the corresponding shape, or would you do different shapes each day?

This was super cool. Love your approach to teaching and how clearly you outline it all. I reckon I've been looking for this video for about 15 years.

What a great lesson!! Jack, please do more lessons likt this (learning to play the changes, mapping out chord tones all over the neck etc.).

thanks for the lesson Jack. Always been a huge fan of your playing from Instagram and recently came across your patreon. Really happy I did.

Yes in the begining that's how I would think about it. But once you practice moving through the shapes more it become second nature. You want to get to the point where you can see the chord tones wherever you are on the neck and seamlessly get from one shape to another.

I'm thinking that each arpeggio is made up of a root-3rd-5th-7th. And moving that around to each chord I'm playing over. It takes time. It's best to slowing practice the shapes in each poisition and focus on how each note relates to the chord.

Thanks for this Jack. I've got a lot of work to do :) Out of curiousity, how did you get to the stage of knowing all the notes in each arpeggio? eg do just know (after lots of solid practice) that the 4th is always made up of 4-6-1-b3 of the root? OR... are you more thinking that each arpeggio will be made up of a root-3rd-5th-b7th?

This is great. Thanks man!

So when you're in the "G shape" A7 position and you see a D7 coming up in the next bar are you thinking, "Where is my D root in this spot on the neck. Ahh, it's there so I'm going to play a 'C Shape' 7 triad"

Love this. I just started trying to learn CAGED properly so this is perfect timing. I have something to practice
