Hey, I’m not Jack, but an easy example to visualize the concept is the A minor scale, which I’m sure you already know. Whenever you play that A minor chord with the root on the 6th string(The E shape of caged) the underlying scale under that e minor shaped chord is always position 1 of the minor scale. Every shape has a scale that is always underneath it. Different for major and minor though.
