It's something that my brain had been unravelling for a few years before I discovered that I was really thinking about these mode things that I'd heard about. It started when I was thinking that when I change from a G chord to a C chord, for example, I don't really want to change to the C scale - I still want to use the notes of the G scale while playing over C. I think that it was a Rick Beato video that alerted me to what I was really doing.
