How To Use The Harmonic Minor Scale!

How To Use The Harmonic Minor Scale!

Thanks Nelson for the recommendation. I have charted the song and will try and learn it. Hopefully be able to play it a jam. I prefer the Diana Krall cover too as I sing without the Tom Waits rasp. Cheers from Australia

Wow...I never heard that tune before. It's a 100% scorcher - gotta learn it. Thanks Jack, it's always cool to learn "new" old songs.

The Tom Waits classic "Temptation" is a cool Latin flavored minor tune w a dominant five chord (verse: i - V7 - V7 - i/ chorus: iv - i - V7 - i then iv - i - II7 - V7). This tune comes up occasionally at open jams. Diana Krall does a nice version (imo). Here is a backing track in her style. It's in Cm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBaztmqM-NQ

Man it's really just what sounds good. Lost of experimentation and listening to what other great player do.

Thanks Jack. Will do

Jack--Thanks for the video. It's timely. I've been supporting your channel on YT and Patreon and TF. I've learned a lot. Still, I was wondering, how do you decide which notes to play on a lick? For example, on Lick 1, was there anything in particular that made you select the notes G#, G, then G an octave lower? I would not have even thought about that sequence of notes although the chords G#/Ab, and G are there. I'm not looking for a magic bullet, just curious if you approach writing a lick from ear or do you map out the notes and use leading tones to come up with a line. thanks rick

Yes! Most minor blues tunes will work, as long as there's a dominant 5 chords. Also check out 'The Girl That Radiates That Charm' by Arthur Alexander.

Great lesson Jack. Could you please suggest a few songs that this lesson would work with? I'm thinking "The Thrill is Gone" and "Blues Ain't Nothing" by Johnny Copeland? Am I on track? Thanks
