Modal Mixture Practice Track! (For next video)
Added 2018-12-08 22:26:25 +0000 UTCI spent the last week organizing and practicing for a Christmas concert for some students, friends, and neighbors (I had to sing!) so I haven't been able to work on videos, but I did finish a very important element to my next video.
This floaty and ethereal jam track will be used extensively throughout my next lesson, which will be on Modal Mixture; combining scales together that have a common tonal center. In this case we are combining E major and E minor.
I want you to try writing leads and melodies over this simple two chord jam. You may realize there is no major scale or mode that contains the notes of both chords, so you will be forced to leave the safety of just a single scale.
There is no right or wrong way to approach this chord progression, but in the coming video I will be demonstrating 2 methods- the first one is to use the E Major scale over the E chord and then use the parallel minor scale (E Minor) to solo over the A minor chord.
The other option would be to use a scale like Mixolydian b6 that contains all 6 of the notes in both chords.
We will also explore other scale options, and the consequences of using them: how it feels, why it works, why it doesn't. For now I just want you to have fun with this dreamy practice track and play around with what sounds best for YOU! And if any of this is confusing, hopefully the video will clear up any confusion =]
Also I will be doing a Patreon Only lesson here this month, there's a Christmas song I arranged and it's fairly easy to sing even for a guy with a bad range like myself, so I'm going to post the tabs and video just for you here. Stay tuned!
