Live in 1 Hour: Modal Masterclass Week 4 of 6

Tonight we'll be completing our understanding of the minor key. We'll explore the misunderstood melodic minor scale, and how to write with it while briefly looking at its modes. We'll also take a peek at an interesting mode of Harmonic Minor and get a better grasp of what your advanced modal options will look like beyond this course.

I'm excited to actually teach melodic minor, at long last! I talk a lot of crap about the scale for several reasons but tonight I'll give it a fair shake and I do believe many of you will find some value there.

Here's the link to watch live or later: https://youtube.com/live/6T64xX-n5_A?feature=share

I've also attached a pdf for the slideshow I'll be working off of. Hope you can make it!

My submission below! Song is in Am. Progression is as follows: Part A: Am - C - D - Am - C - B7 (4x) i bIII IV i bIII II First interlude/riff I approached is as 'A Dorian #4', but feel like it came out more E harmonic minor sounding. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Part B: Dm - Am - E - Am (x2) iv i V i Second interlude/riff: A meldoic minor Quick little ending solo is noodling Am pentatonic over Part A. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/cxer0eqke6kfzam55shxq/Funk-2_Signals-Week-4.mp3?rlkey=507ja9y525lhhse8s3ugg5h2f&st=248nkbbm&dl=0 Cheers!

Thanks for another great lesson, Jake. Lots of ideas to work with in the future. I think quite a bit of discipline is required to use these concepts, and crucially hold on to the tonal centre, and not accidentally change key. Your examples are really inspiring, so thanks for those too. Looking forward to the rest of the class.
