Anime World Order Show # 242 – You CAN Stop the Signal, If You’re a Buff Catgirl

We've changed our RSS back-end to hopefully be compliant with the modern podcast directory standards ("modern" meaning "since 2019"...), so if you have any odd behaviors in your subscription such as redownloading old episodes, let us know.

In this episode, by popular request Daryl reviews the 1998 sci-fi Western Outlaw Star, which we all remember so little about it's almost like we're seeing it for the first time. The original Toonami Generation is now middle-aged, after all. Visit www.animeworldorder.com for full show notes and supplemental links.

I can't catch references that, as far as I can see, don't exist. I just rewatched the opening to Nadia as well as both openings to Outlaw Star, and there are no shots in the opening of Melfina descending into the control tunnel for me to compare against any shots in the Nadia opening at all. I suppose the final shot of Nadia in the Nadia opening could potentially be similar, but it's not even what I would consider the same pose since Melfina always has her arms crossed and Nadia in that shot does not. The shot of Melfina looking at a necklace is from episode 9 of Outlaw Star, and it didn't strike as being a reference to the Blue Water because the jewel Melfina is looking at is a flat, possibly rounded stone whereas the Blue Water is a more angular, diamond cut.

I was hoping you’d catch the reference where Melfina is descending into her control tunnel in the opening and a similar scene (pose, lighting, and I think state of dress) in the *Nadia* opening. This is more than just a resemblance, because, somewhere fairly early in the show, Gene or Jim go shopping with Melfina, and you see her entrance by a necklace with a strong resemblance to The Blue Water.
