A Time Team Christmas: Dani & Naomi's Festive Feast

The merriment continues with a special Christmas themed chat from Dani Wootton and Naomi Sewpaul. The Winter Solstice proved the perfect opportunity to get together and answer your questions!

In this informal, wide-ranging conversation, we discover more about Naomi's love for potatoes (yes, really) and get greater insight into the life of an archaeologist.

Please note: This conversation was recorded on Zoom during stormy British weather conditions (in true Time Team style). Please forgive the picture quality!

Yes, turkeys are native here in the States. We have them living wild here in Maryland; they are ubiquitous in New England and often run in gangs across the streets! Fun Fact: I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who wanted the Wild Turkey to be our national animal, instead of the American Bald Eagle.

I love Dani and Naomi's conversations and this one was delightful. Naomi, have you tried lefse? It's a Scandinavian potato flatbread, which is particularly served in the US at the holiday season. A big debate is whether to dust the buttered lefse with white sugar or brown sugar before rolling it up. I am a renegade and like a little lignonberry jam on mine. Hope you all have a wonderful, Happy and Healthy New Year!

Great fun, thank you.

THANKS folks for the year of delightful digs, finds and character fun enactments and just plain goofing around, topped with your Christmas surprise gifts and this one for us Patreons, from BC Canada. Dig On!

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

About the lady buried with foxglove and medicinal plants. I remember some discussion about her being a healer. If so, then I would guess she was buried with the tools of her trade, meaning that the foxglove etc were not intended to heal her but were rather plants that she used to heal others. Like burying a warrior with a weapon or a carpenter with a saw.

OMG!!!! This is my Christmas present!!! I am from USA, and I just love the dry wit and silliness that spontaneously errupts from time to time. Especially the wet ones!!! Thanks for all you do!!

It was just lovely being able to spend time with you both and catch up on what’s been happening for Time Team recently. Thank you for answering my question - really looking forward to TT 30th Anniversary.

Fifty minutes of great Q & A... an absolutely lovely Christmas gift. 🙏 A HUGE thank you to Naomi & Dani for sharing your time with us all on Patreon. Happy Holidays to everyone. 🎄✨ Loved it.

What an absolutely wonderful video and a great festive gift. What this effectively is is two mates, who both happen to be hugely experienced archaeologists, having a laugh and a chat and it was a joy. The fact that there was a load of archaeological content just dropped into the conversation, which I suppose was inevitable, was a huge bonus. Without wishing to sound overblown about the whole thing, I think this is what TT, especially the new version, is all about so keep it up one and all, there is still a ready audience for what you do, even if the mainstream TV companies don't think so. P.S. Love your sweater, Naomi.

I suspect the people in question are confused or don’t realise the difference between natural climate change and the climate crisis caused by humanity in recent decades, Stephanie. To quote from the United Nations statement on “The climate crisis – a Race we can Win:" 'Climate change is the defining crisis of our time and it is happening even more quickly than we feared. But we are far from powerless in the face of this global threat…No corner of the globe is immune from the devastating consequences of climate change. Rising temperatures are fueling environmental degradation, natural disasters, weather extremes, food and water insecurity, economic disruption, conflict, and terrorism. Sea levels are rising, the Arctic is melting, coral reefs are dying, oceans are acidifying, and forests are burning. It is clear that business as usual is not good enough. As the infinite cost of climate change reaches irreversible highs, now is the time for bold collective action.' While I understand it is impossible for humanity, and all live forms, to exist on Earth without having some impact on the environment and its climate, the concern in the past few years has been purely focused on the type of “climate chaos” that is impacts us all. In Australia we have experienced searing temperatures beyond record levels (since records were kept) and sometimes, as happened in my area recently – followed next day by enough rain to cause wide-spread flooding. Perhaps when talking about climate change we need to distinguish more clearly, or more often, what type of climate change we are talking about. I’ll certainly try to be more mindful about this in future so as not to mislead or confuse people when talking about it.

I loved this episode. And thank you both for answering my question. Christmas blessings to you both and to all the Time Team family and supporters here on Patreon. 🎄

These little chats are great fun to see. They truly bring an additional element into the science of archeology. Nice to get to know the people on a more personal basis. Thanks you time time!

Mary Lu Perham

This was fun! Merry Christmas you guys!

Delaine Keenum

What a fascinating conversation and a Secret Santa gift for Patreons. Happy holidays and best wishes to all!

JanD

Outstanding seasonal discussion! Well done. Happy Holidays!

Thank you, both, for answering my questions. And then you started chatting about excavating potatoes out of big pots... YUM. Pink Fir Apple (very tasty, waxy and firm and good cold as well), Highland Burgundy Red (tasty pink mash!), Salad Blue (best roast spud I've eaten and blue all the way through) all grown by me in pots when I had an allotment. Nothing like growing your own, indeed! All the best to all for 2024.

Lynn Edwards

Climate change...makes me crazy that people don't realize the earth changes and we can't do a damn thing about it. Don't mean we can't assist the earth with changes but climate change is always changing.

Stephanie Stewart

Milkweed flower, foxgloves/digitalis, Bracken ferns. I am wondering if they were also medicines picked in their peak beauty and scent filled blossoming times?
