Derek is joined for a chat by Andreas Viberg, Product Manager of Guideline Geo, the Swedish company that provides state-of-the-art ground penetrating radar equipment used at some of our digs.

Sutton Hoo | Spoil Heap Q&A: Andreas Viberg

Comments

I think it is an abbreviation for "Ground Penetrating Radar" (funnily enough radar is also short for something).

Mikael Kjaer

Never mind. Ground penetrating radar. I get it

Priscilla Waller

What does "gpr"" stand for?

Priscilla Waller

My father’s family is from Vendel and my grandparent’s graves are a stones-throw away from one of the boat burials - I’ve said it before, being able to pitch in and make this dig possible brings me so much joy. Sutton Hoo has been on my bucket list for decades.

Helena Frisk

Thank you both, I enjoyed your chat. Andreas Viberg's knowledge of the two sites mentioned and wealth of technical expertise will be quite beneficial in interpreting the landscape in and around Sutton Hoo. I look forward to hearing more from him as the investigation continues.

Thank you for these two links, Kmpm. Although I've yet to investigate the related links in the articles, I find it interesting that (despite the impressive level of preservation, esp in Valsgärde) there was no mention of finding oars or signs of sails in or near the mounds at either site. The article only states how many oarsmen there was space for on each boat. I have many questions... Thank you again 🙏 Cheers.

How does the landscape archeological work of Stewart Ainsworth complement/align with the work of John Gator’s team?

Shannon

Thanks for this wonderful question. Of course, it suggests that the folks living near Sutton Hoo were originally from Sweden. It would be so interesting to do some test pitting in Woodbridge and Rendlesham.

Elizabeth Neill

John 'Rolls Royce of Geophys' Gater and his team use the equipment provided by Guideline Geo, and have been on site, working very closely together - we'll be seeing plenty of John in the future coverage!

Time Team

What happened with John Gater and his team?

CCZ

Product Manager, please! 😜

Robin

Vendel was one. They found helmets similar to the famous Sutton Hoo one there. The other sounds like a Vasiada but I can’t find it online, probably not the correct spelling!

Rachel

Sorry for linking to swedish wikipedia but... Vendel: https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A5tgravf%C3%A4ltet_i_Vendel Valsgärde: https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valsg%C3%A4rde

I think he's a salesman.

What were the names of the similar Swedish sites? I'd like to look them up but didn't quite catch them. One sounded like Vandals.

Ceryswyn

For myself, I, too, would have wished for a more in-depth interview. How does what he does differ from John and Jimmy do?

Bethanny Allain

This is my very first Patreon subscription AND I cannot think of a more worthy YouTube site as, "Time Team" to donate too🥳Am somewhat disappointed as I wanted to reply to 'Barbara's email but it is a no reply email account. Questions I have many....I wish you ALL a Great Day and may your finds be many! 👌⭐👍

Marilyn

Great to be getting more Q&As. Would have liked a little more but enjoyed the segment.

David Boon

More guys and gals….

Andrew Lamb

It's great to see more Swedes involved in this. I'm flying over later in June to see it for my self.

Mikael Larsson

Hi, results and interpretations will follow in due course, once the data has been analysed. For now, it's worth checking out Jimmy Adcock's GPR masterclasses under the 'Collections' tab, which give a great overview to GPR (Andreas is Jimmy's colleague!).

Time Team

Nice. But I'd like to get a look at some of the results generated by Andreas' GPR at Sutton Hoo.

Leitchy

Very interesting but just wish we could have seen more, such as a demo, explain how it has improved over the years and some interpretation of data.

Neil Graham

Fantastic Andreas!!!
