Viridian Awakening - Part 1

Part of my new plan is to start posting earlier in the month, and thought it would be nice to give my supporters some Holiday reading.
This is the first installment of the massively edited/re-wriiten/re-imagined/re-everything-ed first novel I ever wrote.
I gave it another polish and discovered that either my editing skills are much improved, or that I really sucked before. I suspect the latter.
As you can no doubt guess from the reference to the Challenger explosion, the story starts in the summer of 1987. So no cell phones, but personal computers were commonplace. (Stop trying to make me feel old!)
Anyone who attended Louisiana State University or lived in Baton Rouge around that time period may recognize a few landmarks.
