My old аrt №1

So, I have a small beak between my new pictures. And as I promised, for a week I’ll be telling you about some of my old ones.

What should I start with? Let’s begin with some sci-fi illustrations.

I don’t like sci-fi.
Not as a conception.
I just don’t like a default approach to it. Once, when I was in a hospital, I’ve got some thick book of Sheckley. And in-between the medical procedures, I’ve managed to read i all. Guess what? There whole book didn’t have a single happy ending! And many of the ‘adult’ sci-fi writers are just the same (And I’ve read a lot of them during my childhood. It was just unreal for a soviet boy to not read the sci-fi!) That’s why it didn’t work out.

Итак у меня небольшая передышка в рисовании новых картинок, и я как обещал, недельку рассказываю вам про мои старые.

С чего бы начать? Давайте с иллюстрациям к научной фантастики.

Я не люблю НФ.
Не концепцию. А стандартный подход.
Я как то лежал в больнице с толстым томом Шекли, и между заботами врачей прочел его всего. И что бы вы думали? Не одного хепиэнда во всей книге! И так у многих "взрослых" фантастов (Я их все таки читал в детстве изрядно. Быть советским мальчишкой и не читать НФ, это не реально!). Поэтому у меня с ними "не сложилось".

But in the same time, I was enchanted by the conception of the traveling to the stars through the endless space, of the new frontier for the humanity, of the weird alien races (especially, the space pirates) and of the science as an adventurer’s weapon.

Но сама концепция путешествия к звездам в бесконечный космос, нового фронтира для человечества, причудливых инопланетян (особенно космические пираты) и науки как оружия приключенца, это все меня завораживало.

I have been finding it all in the ‘children’s’ sci-fi. And in ‘fantasy’ sci-fi.

My benchmark for the fantasy sci-fi until this day is THE OLD TRILOGY of the “Star Wars”. The one where everything haven’t yet come neither to the ‘modern “social” realities’, nor to the milking of the franchise.

Это все я находил в "детской" фантастике. И в "фентезийном" НФ.

Эталоном фентезийного НФ для меня была и остается СТАРАЯ ТРИЛОГИЯ "Звездных Войн". Та где все ещё не скатилось, не в "современные "социальные" реалии", не в дойку франшизы.

And speaking of ‘children’s’ sci-fi, for a soviet boy it mainly consisted of Kir Bulychev’s series about Alisa Selezneva, the girl from the future.

And this particular book:

Ну а если говорить о "детском" НФ, то для советского, опять же, мальчишки, это в первую очередь Кир Булычев и его серия книг про девочку из будущего и Алису Селезнёву.

И Вот эта книга:

“The Expedition to Hell”. It was written by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (a note for my foreign comrades: these are the most renowned soviet sci-fi writers. “S.T.A.L.K.E.R.” is a game loosely based on their works) as a script for the cartoon. But the were a little ashamed by the ‘children’s’ nature of this story and came up with the alias Yaroslavtsev.

But this ‘light’, ‘children’s’ and deliberately ‘unserious’ book has shaken my child’s mind in more powerful way, than all later ‘adult’ books by Strugatskys combined!

In many ways, it inspired my first sci-fi comic 28 years ago.

"Экспедиция в преисподнюю". Её написали братья Стругацкие (для иностранных товарищей сообщаю, это такие самые известные советские фантасты. "S.T.A.L.K.E.R."  эта игра по мотивам их произведения) как сценарий к мультфильму. Но они застеснялись "детскости" этого произведения и придумали псевдоним Ярославцев.

Но эта "легкая", "детская", заведамо "несерьёзная" книга претряхнула мне в детстве сознание как никогда не перетряхивали потом все "взрослые" книги Стругацких!

Во многом из-за неё я сел за свой первый НФ комикс 28 лет назад.

And when you see some space pirates and other sci-fi elements in my modern works, you should now, that they were influenced by the same book.

By that book and Bulychev’s Alisa Selezneva, of course! Namely, my sources of inspirations are the books of the main series, “The Guest from the Future” movie, and “The Mystery of the Third Planet” cartoon. It won’t be even an exaggeration to say, that Kir Bulychev’s books and derivative works have formed my whole generation in many ways.

И если вы все ещё встречаете у меня в произведениях космических пиратов и пр. НФ, это все ещё она.

Она и булычевская Алиса Селезнёва, конечно!
Книги цикла, фильм "Гостья из Будущего" и мультфильм "Тайна третьей планеты". Не  будет преувеличением сказать что книги Кира Булычёва и производные от них, во многом сформировали мое поколение.

Was I going to illustrate them as an artist?
Ha! Of course, not!
The thing is, one of the coolest soviet illustrators, Yevgeniy Migunov, has already illustrated them. And after his works, there’s not much else left to do for me.

But sometimes, when my mood is especially sad, I entertain myself with the “illustrations” to some unwritten book about two girls from future. One is a grown-up ‘Mowgli’ from the space pirates planet, and the other is shipwrecked traveller from the world of bright tomorrow. Nothing serious, but just like re-reading of Bulychev’s books, it helps me to relax.)

Собирался ли я, как художник, их проиллюстрировать?
Ха. Нет конечно!
Дело в том что их проиллюстрировал один из самых крутых советских иллюстраторов Евгений Мигунов. После него мне ловитьв теме  нечего.

Но изредка, когда мне особенно печально, я сажусь иногда и развлекаю себя "иллюстрациями" к ненаписанной книге про двух девчонок из будущего. Одной выросшей "Маугли" на планете космических пиратов, и второй, из мира светлого будущего, потерпевшей на этой планете караблекрушение. Ничего серьёзного, но это, как и перечитывание книг Булычева, меня расслабляет.)

Well, it is left to tell you, how the Old Trilogy of “Star Wars” influenced me… But perhaps, it’s rather big topic, so I’ll tell about it tomorrow, with some pictures, of course.)

Что ж, осталось ещё рассказать как на меня повлияла Старая Трилогия "Звездных войн"... Но это, пожалуй, слишком большая тема, так что пусть это будет завтрашний пост, с картинками.)

P.S.: The title picture is my illustration for the sci-fi magazine “If”. Yes, I don’t like sci-fi, but it doesn’t mean that I have’t illustrated it.)
