Amir's Monster Form Part 3

Lets talk about coloring and rendering! Atlas and I talked about different materials that would have a great effect on Amir's monster body and one of the things we kept coming back to was obsidian and mirrored surfaces. His succubus form is a unique mix of corporeal and ethereal textures/surfaces so we wanted to really highlight the contrast between those.

Amir's 'core' is the most solid part of his body and one of the most important pieces to his shape and structure. You can see here that Altas is working from a photo of real obsidian to nail that lava glass look down. Because the surface is so reflective and shiny, the hot pink of the firery, noncorporeal parts of Amir will reflect off the surface.

Texture!

We went back and forth a couple times on what secondary texture would best suit Amir's core and here Atlas has roughed out some amazing effects. They're all really dynamic and bring a lot to the design, but in the end I went with the more sparkly/glittery one as it is a strong visual link to some of Amir's clothing choices.

Color Scheme!

So color scheming Amir's monster form was quite difficult and we ran through several design possibilities. One of my major concerns is that with Amir's soulfire being a hot pink, I was slightly concerned it would wash out other more neutral tones. These were the final three choices we narrowed it down to.

Each one has its strengths but in the end, we went with option 3 for three reasons:

1. Amir's original skintone is preserved in this design and I really wanted to keep it.

2. Many of the colors in this design are present in his other outfits, creating a more cohesive color language.

3. I thought the balance between neutrals and purples could better stand up to the hot pink soulfire without being washed out.

SO. Next monster update I'll be able to show you some of the insane lighting effects Altas has incorporated into Amir.
