This was surreal to put together. I set it in my schedule back in mid May after I finished my last China video, and then lo and behold everything started happening at once over in Hong Kong.
So usually I have my nice cushy 500-year gap between the subject of my videos and tangible present-day consequences and OH BOY did I not have that luxury this time. I really tried my best to just tell the history on this one. I think it's an instance where I can say a lot about the current situation by letting the history speak for itself.
But oh man is it a right mess going on there now. China is taking any opportunity possible to throttle Hong Kong, and in recent days its gotten really underhanded, since they're seeing just how little moral high grounds they have to stand on. What worries me most is the escalation of violence on the part of law enforcement. The justification of "We were stopping a riot" was the same one they used during the Tiananmen Square Massacre. ANYWAY, not to get too openly terrified of the way things are headed, but point is that it's more important now than ever to learn the history behind these things. History really can be a powerful tool if wielded effectively.
Man, now I really want to visit Hong Kong...
FUNNY STORY, this was actually meant to be the first in a history series about Micro-States/City-States — Singapore, Malta, UAE, Gibraltar. Guess I just happened to start on the spiciest one. If you want to see more Micro-State Histories, let me know!
