Miscellaneous Myths: Aphrodite!

one upon a time I was falling in love, but now I'm only falling into an ever-deepening spiral of historical complexities and fragmentary mythology in endless and futile pursuit of the truth

Miscellaneous Myths: Aphrodite!

Comments

I love your videos mentioning Ishtar! You should also mention that Babylonian "Ishtar" was Sumerian "Inanna." Thanks!

"STREET SMARTS!" made me snort soda through my nose.

*shrug* Religions change over long periods of time, stuff gets dropped or added. IDK

I don't think it works that way. Aphrodite was worshipped sincerely throughout Greece, with details changed here and there, for hundreds of years. I dunno what could be more canon than that.

Iochannon

So Aphrodite is not really canon in Greek pantheon just a Inanna turn Greek?

Two things: I freaking love how you use the Greek "Ouranos" rather than the (in English) funnier-sounding "Uranus." Basically, you win forever in my book just for that. Also, as a life long lover of weird-ass Greek mythology, I cannot get enough of your deep-dives into the history of mythical figures. I always learn stuff when you guys do one of these.

This dichotomy reminds me of the theoretical relationship between Freya and Frigg. Freya is more of an impulsive character, a symbol of sex and warfare, while Frigg is wise and shrewd and symbolizes motherly/wifely devotion. And yet, there's some etymological confusion that suggests they were once the same person. Possibly because the proto-Scandinavians left the PIE homeland emphasizing the motherly traits of PIE goddess 1, while proto-Germans left the PIE homeland emphasizing the sexy traits of PIE goddess 1. Later, the descendants of proto-Scandinavians and proto-Germans meet and trade deities, and by then, they've basically got two goddesses instead of the original one.
