A written series where it's used more subtly than we expect ... Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series, where Our Hero heroically loses a possessing entity (yes, heroically) and then Because In-Story Reasons Based In How Magic Works, he stops remembering not only that he CAN do a particular thing, but that it was his go-to overkill, and the whole thing is hidden by a form of amnesia that his ENTIRE cohort of peers plus the few family/friends he has, DO notice, but which Our Hero does NOT notice until his nose is rubbed in it, whence the block that was imposed magically is broken. But he still doesn't do as much of his old overkill move as he used to do.

2019-09-22 18:02:55 +0000 UTCSo, one series where it's used to good end, and is forgivable because we know It Was The Villain: Power Rangers RPM, the actual best season of a Power Rangers show ever written and you should all watch it, because it is truly amazing in terms of tightness of writing and characterization, leaves you clues to the actual outcome in the very first episode, and has some of the best actual acting in any Power Rangers series.
