It's a brand new series of #Shorts!

As mentioned in the last Patron Spring seasonal update, we've got a new series! "City Minute" is all about awesome cities from all around the world and across history, delivered in 1-minute vertical installments.

Ah, when "Vertical Video" used to be a crime on par with bank robbery, how times change.

Today we've got this intro video to explain the concept of the series, and then we've got a short for Athens and a short for Carthage — For the sake of avoiding clutter, I'm just posting this Intro short on patreon, but there are these two as well!

Depending on how the work schedule shakes out, I'm aiming to get one of these every other week or so (at least to start). Per the results of the patreon poll, I'll be starting in the ancient world!

I'm also thinking of doing rare drops of multiple cities in one day, in place of one of my regular uploads as special occasions — like a 5-short day for Cities of the British Empire, or some such. Would that be something you're interested in, or is it blasphemy to replace a mainline video with a handful of shorts? Please drop a comment if you have thoughts, and be honest! I'd rather you say it's a bad idea now before I cross the proverbial rubicon.

Anyway, this is a fun thing I've had in my head for a while, and I'm finally able to get to it, so I hope you enjoy!

Love the concept. Don’t love the vertical video. Is there a specific platform other than YT that benefits from it?

This.

Can’t wait!

The content of the video is fine, but the new subtitles are awful. The font has way too many serifs and randomly italicized letters to be readable at the same rate as the dialogue spoken, and the subtitles in general take up WAY too much of the screen. Please make subtitles an optional overlay via Closed Captioning rather than an inseparable part of the video file.

I am not particularly opposed to having shorts instead of main videos, but I would prefer a full video instead.

Really looking forward to the content. Really not looking forward to the vertical. Those huge black spaces on either side of the very crowded/small display are just frustratingly wasted land. Please, I'm begging you, don't fall into the vertical fad. Please.

I'm liking the content but really not big on the narrow vertical format with 25% covered by subtitles (subtitles good! Size not). I was expecting 1min videos that are otherwise the same landscape visuals as normal. I've not seen YouTube's shorts before, so is it a YouTube thing that all shorts are in this format? Relevant note: I always watch on telly, never on my phone, and I can see why this would be easier for that medium.

it sure was a joy to see three notifs on the server all of a sudden, i was like "HUH?!?!?!?!" thought mee6 was broken or smthn

Is this a New York minute or an LA minute?

Stephen Gillie

Okay, I have watched all the shorts so far. I think this is an excellent idea and a natural development for the channel to go into.

Cities of the British Empire sounds excellent. I could also see a series on cities of the middle ages cover Paris, London, Lubeck, etc. Or a series on the capitals of the countries who went into World War I on the eve of the Great War. Generally I like the idea of a series of shorts doing snapshots of different cities at the same time showing different interconnected aspects of their various ties.

Rambles in the Rust Belt

This sounds like a great idea. It really makes a change from ‘leaders’ history. Looking forward to it.

A good way to think of it might be as an introduction to the topic to allow you to delve deeper into it in a mainline video. My knee jerk reaction to this was it sounds like what you and Red had said before about your videos being used as an entry point for students in classrooms to catch their interest/find that one thing that carries them through.

I like these so far but I think they need to be 2 or 3 minutes rather than just one so you can actually touch on more relevant info for the cities.

Robert Davis

I think it'd be a good idea!

Salvatore Corasaniti

I would prefer a mainline video rather than a series of shorts!

Deborah

Whichever you do, I'll watch it!

Ooo! Looking forward to this!
