Miscellaneous Myths: Medea!

Comments

Fun fact: the actress who played Mrs. Dursley in the Potter franchise (Fiona Shaw) also won the London West End equivalent of an Oscar for her stage performance as Medea a while back. 2002 IIRC.

Medea was one of my favourite Ancient Greek plays, so really happy that you covered it!

Yeah, Jason is the quintessential asshole guy who thinks he doesn't need anyone else and did everything on his own when, in reality, he had help from dozens of people.

Medea is pretty creepy and all, and there's definitely a lot of murder, but I really, really (excuse me) fucking hate Jason. He doesn't even do other heroic stuff, like Theseus. I could not believe that Rick Riordan used the name for one of his heroes. She does all of that stuff for him, and not only does Jason ditch her, but he has the immortal rind to blame HER for everything when he's as much to blame as she is (and the only one who benefits). He's shocked, SHOCKED that she'd resort to violence. It's too bad that Glauce didn't give him a big, meaningful hug at the right moment.

Interesting that the gods are okay with Medea murdering her kids just to punish Jason. That always bugged me in the book of Job too -- "Hey let's torment THIS guy by killing his kids!" Leave the kids out of it, you terrible people.

I was just looking up the modern day location of (Colchis?) to find out it's modern day Georgia. Does that Make Medea Slavic?

Also my namesake was a dick!

Was Medea unable to bring her kids with her to Athens? I mean, I get that they were the ones to give the poisoned crown over, but she knew she would be protected in Athens. And she knew Jason barely cared about the kids enough to care until it affected him. I was really with her up until that.

Some were less 'bastardy' and more 'a bit stupid' to be fair.

Jason and the Argonauts: The Avengers of Greek mythology.

One has to wonder if there was 'any' Greek hero who wasn’t an absolute bastard by modern standards.
