Trope Talk: Dragons!

Comments

There was an earlier talk on dragons, more modern cultural than anything, here: https://spookysaturday.podbean.com/e/spooky-saturday-episode-11-dragons/

Hmm ... So the consistent themes are size and power. Electric power lines are long and snaky So the "Chernobyl" series is the story of how corrupt rulers interfered with the original agreement with the dragon they bred. I'm glad everyone else had sense enough to spend enough money up front, so the dragons only shut their eyes and went to sleep, when mishandled. Or melted a bit. I have a little fairy dragon, called a "USB-a to USB-C cable, that is powerful enough, when connected to the main dragon, to charge my phone. Thanks for a wonderful lesson. Stay safe.

OMG I love dragons so much. Thank you for tackling this topic <3 <3 btw, the picture at 15:16 with all the representations in the dragons wings would make an epic mug!

YASS I LOVE DRAGONS!! The only thing I felt was missing from the vid was the sentient dragon - the dragon that is their own character with their own ideology (like in Wings of Fire, Draco in Dragonheart, Temeraire) Basically, to dwelve more into the whole concept of authors giving dragons a personality to expresses their opinion/love/discomfort with human actions or whatever... I know western dragons were symbols of nature, paganism and therefore must be conquered by men (that's why there's so many depictions of white nights slaying dragons) But now in modern media and books dragons can be written as characters with their own goals/arcs. idk if there's something to explore about that? Anyway, I love dragons so much I could talk forever about them ;; I have my own comic about them (The Draconem Nebula) check it out if you like cartoon dragons! Great video! I'm excited to see more! <3 <3

12:46, 14:31 Here's a question then: Do dinosaurs count as dragons? (from a narrative standpoint)

Now I really want to read the paper discussing the cladistic relationships among dragons. And the arguments about convergent vs monophyletic between dragons on different continents :-)

Hugh Fisher

Coincidently autocorrect tells me there is a word aileron, literally from 'little wing' [insert Jimi Hendrix riff here] and is: "a hinged surface in the trailing edge of an aeroplane wing, used to control the roll of an aircraft about its longitudinal axis." ... so, its close enough

DRAGONS!!!

Actually gasped when I saw the title of the video pop up. Made my day!

Just finished the video, and wanted to mention, to the best of my knowledge, the use of Alicorn for a winged unicorn actually originates from the My Little Pony fan community (bronies), was later adopted by the show, and then spread out from there. The word "alicorn" originally referred to the material that made up a unicorn's horn. (I remember there being quite a bit of arguing in 2011 between those that favored "alicorn", and those that favored word constructs like "pegacorn", but the alicorn faction eventually won out.)
