I am an older weeb. I was in high school when DBZ still in its initial run on Toonami and Naruto started when I was in college. Most of what I know about Sailor Moon I got through pop culture osmosis. Though I did watch most of the arc involving Sailor Saturn and her mad scientist father when it was on cartoon network. Not sure why I decided to start following the show at that point, but once I started, I stayed with it through the end of the arc.

Before the 90s anime hit Hulu, the only full season I had seen was Sailor Moon S, by way of some fansub videos I borrowed from a friend. I decided to start watching it from the beginning, and I noticed clear character development on Usagi's part. Like in Season 1, she's more of a crybaby and not wanting to fight, but she matures as time goes on. -The Usagi & Mamoru relationship makes a lot more sense in the manga (and by extension in Crystal, which more closely adapts it than the '90s anime). It has a more natural progression of ups and downs imo, and like Indigo said, you don't have the weird age gap thing. Mamoru still has identity crises and gets brainwashed (including BY Chibiusa when she gets turned into Black Lady, which makes the whole "Chibiusa flirts with Mamoru" thing even more weird) but they work through it and come out stronger. (And the love rival thing goes both ways in the manga, since Haruka/Uranus flirts with Usagi in the S arc, and even kisses her at one point I think, though Haruka acknowledges their relationship, saying "Your prince is here" and bailing when Mamoru shows up after their kiss). As for him going abroad in Stars, it actually has more impact in the manga because Usagi actually witnesses him getting killed by Galaxia, but suppresses the memory out of shock, unlike in the 90s anime where she doesn't know he's dead and has a bit of a side fling with Seiya. The only time I didn't like the Usagi & Mamoru relationship was in the live-action TV drama Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. They just messed it up there IMO. -I only vaguely remember the old DiC/Cloverway dub. It can be cringey but it has its charms. The music is actually pretty good, the Sailor Says segments are funny. Some actors are better than others (I can't stand Linda Ballantyne's Usagi). There are some great lines too, like in the third season when Usagi gives her two cents in this discussion with Haruka and Michiru about helping others and Michiru is like "Well, Serena, I must say you have passionate opinions." IDK why I find that line so funny. Also I had no idea about the dreidel thing in the S movie...that's so random. They kinda did the opposite thing with the S season where in the dub the Messiah of Silence became the Sovereign of Silence (and the Holy Grail became the "Purity Chalice"), as if they were purposely avoiding the religious implications. (The "good Messiah," which - surprise surprise - turned out to be Sailor Moon, was also apparently called the Sovereign, though she was also called the "Purity Princess," the "Legendary Princess," and the "Ambassador of Good" π). -I definitely recommend watching Sailor Moon Crystal if you want the base story elements without a lot of the weird fluff (which is probably the source of much of the "anime b.s." Red was complaining about). Like the manga it's based on, it's much more to the point. -Sailor Moon was influenced by Sentai shows (like Super Sentai/Power Rangers), so that probably explains the shonen tropes. (Mostly it influenced the "team of magical girls" thing; I think Sailor Moon was the first magical girl series to have that). I honestly don't know what I would recommend as a new anime to someone. I got into anime when I was like 14, so I don't think I really ever had a weeb phase, and I generally avoid a lot of that stuff. I guess PokΓ©mon is a good one, especially on the "knowing Japanese culture" meter (they VERY actively avoid it, leading to incidents like the infamous "onigiri as jelly donuts" scene). You also can pretty much start anywhere too. For me, I wasn't into the classic Shonen Jump series like Dragonball and Naruto back in the day, but I'm reconsidering watching them, especially now that Crunchyroll has all the Dragonball seasons. I'm also considering watching Yu-Gi-Oh since I got into collecting the cards during COVID when PokΓ©mon cards became super unobtainable. I'm hoping my experience will be as good as it was with Digimon (which I dissed back in the '90s but rediscovered via Netflix and so far really like).
