2021-12-04 03:56:53 +0000 UTCFun fact: The Mongol turned around because Ögedei Khan had just uninstalled and the leaders all had to return to the Karakoram mountains to sort out the empire. They'd be back in about 47 years, after failing twice to get to Japan - while Marco Polo was in Beijing taking notes about a sweet bridge - and Poland would hold them off. Ths all happened during the Wolff minimum, which supports my "more swords than grain" theory of chaos in civilizations. (When people have more swords than grain, or equivalents, we naturally start fighting over the resources.)
