The part about Mercedes telling her son the truth has made me want to read this book more than I want oxygen. It's such a beautiful moment, and so wonderfully done. I... I am speechless and I adore it

2025-11-13 17:34:29 +0000 UTCIf you’ve ever read or seen Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Eugene O’Neill’s semi autobiographical play (good CHRIST what a family, puts the dys in dysfunctional, don’t miss it), the father earned all his money playing Dantes in The Count of Monte Cristo. (Also true, their cottage was Monte Cristo Cottage). The trouble was that he lost his acting chops for playing anything else, including Shakespeare, which he loved. But The Count filled seats and he wanted the money, so there it was. EVERYONE in Long Day’s Journey has a serious substance abuse problem and a nightmarish past, and it is the closest thing to a perfect Greek Tragedy American literature has ever produced. You walk out like a wrung out dishrag, soul purged with pity and terror. Then you go to bed because you are freaking exhausted.
